Pretty much every country South of Texas has had at times centuries of truly awful government including Venezuela. If you want a poster child of corrupt fucked up countries put anyone from Mexico, Central and South America on it. So I would not use Venezuela as an excuse.

Dude - look at the countries in SA that are doing well - Chile...... what form of government and economy do they have? constitutional republic and capitalism....... take your "anything made by white men must be destroyed" goggles off .....maybe then you'll see that the society they have created is the lest worst of those that have existed.... and the one that it takes corruption the longest to conquer.

Interesting this is. Latin America, Brazil included, has most, if not, all of its countries as corrupt oppressed Hellholes for the majority of the population. So, a country, Chile is doing well. That is good. You forgot Peru.

I had to do a study of Peru, and it is impressive to see how well it is doing with limited resources and a standard corrupt oppressive oligarchy in control for 400+ until the 60s. It shows what good governance can do. The State busted the oligarchy, enforced honest rule of law, created a functional democracy, and actual free markets, along with limited national healthcare (Peru is still poor), free education, and effective use and conservation of its natural resources.

You should check it out.

Don't know if your the right person to ask this but i got a couple of questions. Why is Costa Rica been doing so well for so long compared with the rest of Central America? Also, are Paraguay and Uruguay basically been similar in corruption and dysfunction or not, and if so why not? Thanks.

Can't remember if it was Peru or Paraguay but they just had an extremely rich president get elected for the third(?) time, after getting the laws that got him elected again rammed through congress. They set their congressional hall on fire in protest.

Sorry, I only know about Peru because I had to learn enough to do a comparison with another country (South Africa) to better understand what makes for a successful country. I had some good knowledge but it's twenty years out of date. So when ND pointed out Chile, it was oops for me. In some ways, it's still Augusto Pinochet's little horror house.

I know nothing about Costa Rica because there is nothing going on. Except for the drug smuggling causing besides the usual conflicts, an addiction crisis. Which is kinda goofy as one of the reasons political science is my major is because I like finding what works in a society, and that is a good reason to look at Costa Rica!

Peru is a fairly conventional free market economy and parliamentary democracy system. Which is one of the reasons I studied it. It's successful now because of it's low corruption, effective government, and policies that benefit the poorer majority.
