Any moron that doesn't negotiate their salary deserves neither a job nor a salary...
I negotiated mine, and was able to get $5000 more than they were offering originally. You don't get ahead by being complacent.
I need to work on this as well. Recruiters are getting quite savvy about side-stepping any sort of negotiation process.
Her: "
How much are you making currently?" Me: "
X"
Her: "
Ok, so you're looking for around X+5k, right ok" Me: "
Uhh yeah" (thinking there will be an actual discussion of this with employer)
Employer: "
Great you're hired" Me: "
Umm thanks. How much are you gonna pay me?"
Employer: "
Oh, we already discussed that with Her, it's X+5k. Why are you such a jerk for asking that, anyway??"
When headhunters ask me how much I made when looking for work, I said it's not relevant to the job I'm going for. I then turn the question back on them, what is the rate the client is looking for?
They normally push a low ball number out, one of the things they do is try to make at least a 50% profit on most jobs... so if they offer, never accept the first number. Especially if it's less than you were making before, or as you pointed out 5K over your old job... that's not worth moving period...
I made a 25% increase from my old job to this one... my next job if I get it, I'll be doing the same.
Always bid higher than you expect to get, they will try to knock you down, but where they normally will knock you down to is where you wanted to be in the first place.
Of course, if they don't budge in the first place, they aren't serious about getting you in, and are just looking for bodies to throw at a problem.
20+ years of contracts... you learn how to talk to assholes like that...
I'm going to try that the next time around. Basically, I got hired after (going back to) college for about double anything that I'd made before. The next job was a 40% increase, and this one was a side-step, and a total mistake. Long story short, I was not hired for the job that I interviewed for.
Now I just want to get the fuq out of here, so X+5k sounds fantastic right now.
I think it will be pretty great, so I'll take the time to negotiate next one.

Without know the specifics, probably best. Make as much as you can now, in the most dynamic setting, keeping on top of the private sector tech evolutions, and if you wanna cost later, you can take your turn milking it then

Yeah, try to give as little info as possible when negotiating, if they actually read your resume before contacting you, they should know your going rate. Also, some people actually put their going rate on their resume, I never have, but it works for some people.

Yeah, that's the plan. I need to get back into the technical 'mud' first, and sharpen up a bit. I've spent nearly 2 years "gathering reporting requirements" and testing, and it's driving me insane. I thought I was coming here to be a SQL developer/DBA. Kinda furious about that, but whatever. Time to move on.

A government gig has some pretty big pluses. Holidays and weekends off,... going home at 5 everyday.

I go home every day at 4:30... I can't complain. I also set up my own pension... so I'm golden when I retire.

Last year your world was falling apart and now you're set up through retirement. I wouldn't complain either.

I'm also almost making 6 figures, so yeah... life has gotten better. A little easier, but right now I'm paying back bills etc... and not saving a lot till they are caught up... once they are though, We will be able to save about $2000 a month to put to the side to get a loan to move into a new house if we can't get the one we are in today....
