You want to pretend that Sweden was a united nation, including Norway as part of its territory? Sure, stooge.
I don’t need to pretend anything, it’s in your own citation:
  • ...negotiations between the two governments led to Sweden's recognition of Norway as an independent constitutional monarchy on 26 October 1905. On that date, King Oscar II renounced his claim to the Norwegian throne, effectively dissolving the United Kingdoms of Sweden and Norway.
What’s throwing you for a loop there, buddy? Is it because they were called United Kingdoms instead of United States? Is that why you think a dissolution of United government is somehow different than a secession?

I know Bjorn is going to come in here and mop the floor with both of us, but this was a 'personal union' with Sweden, not a single nation. You can't pretend that this has any semblance of what's happening in California.
What does the name United States of America imply? Doesn’t sound like the name of an old fashioned nation state.

Anyway, did anyone mention Slovakia?

"United States" was a plural noun, universally; up until the second revolution at least, and for a while afterwards.

Some of us lunatics still use it as such. :goteam: :drunk:

Has Bjorn showed up to tell GCF that the dissolution of a United Kingdom into smaller, separate kingdoms is not that different than a state seceding (aka dissolving its bonds) from a larger union of states yet?

Because Bjorn is apparently the only authority qualified to teach GCF English.

I pretty well hate Californians, and this guy has me defending their right to self-determination.

I do believe that this case is just going to boil down to whether or not that states have to do the federal government's job. If immigration is actually a federal matter then why do states have to spend resources (man-hours, housing, food, transportations, raids, etc...) of what is expected that federal agents are required (and some may argue only they can do) to do?

If our system allowed California to foot 100% of the bill and restrict the immigrants they bring in to CA I'd say they should be able to whatever the fuck they want.

Unfortunately it doesn't work that way.

This thread has some potential.

State defiance of federal law on immigration is serious fucking business, indeed. What's happening in Sacramento is no joke.

I'm waiting for a podcast episode, an essay, a blog post, anything, from a serious thinking about the analogues to state enforcement of the Fugitive Slave Act. Anybody have any any good analysis yet?

We live in interesting times.

When states are actively acting to prevent the Federal government from doing its job, it’s a little disingenuous to frame the issue as the states refusing to do the Feds job.

It’s like framing Pablo Escobar as a guy who was simply unwilling to do the DEAs job for them. True, Pablo was no DEA agent, but his role consisted of a little more than passively refusing to bust drug dealers for the DEA.
