Re: MOAB Dropped in Afghanistan
Meh, Pakistan is cranking out nukes like they are hot cakes, and they've reverse engineered the Tomahawk cruise missile to deliver them, so it's mobile, intermediate, and under the coverage, and so India could never get the jump without getting nuked right back, hence, it's a stalemate, which is why Pakistan keeps the Taliban & Co around, assymetrical, and protects them from the USA and its Daisey Cutters, by letting them hide out in PakiCambodia.

The Scandanavians and Canadians are all over it.
This time the USA done f**ked up!
This time they're gonna get theirs!!!!
"Dude, I'm sayin'! The Sino-Russian alliance with an assist from the highly
technical mobile Pakistani reverse-engineered nuclear force and TaliCambodia gonna
get the mean ol' USA! You'll see!!!"
Here I thought weathermen had horrible prediction records.

Re: MOAB Dropped in Afghanistan
I wouldn't call it an existential threat, which is why it's crazy to keep swimming up river into the teeth of it, if the US just walks away from Afghanistan, it goes back to being India and Russia's problem, it's now been Vietnam all over again, for longer than the actual Vietnam, Americans don't even care, Afghanistan goes for months on end without even being mentioned, it's not worth one more American killed for this mission to nowhere, and yet they are still getting killed, here and there, just not enough for the public to care, but like I say, one is too many, when you're just banging your head against that wall, for almost two decades now, dropping Daisey Cutters into the dirt, while Charlie just bides his time, waiting you out from across the border Cambodia.
The only reason you're still there, is because Obama felt like he had to say "Iraq Bad, Afghanistan Good", had to pick one war to be "good", to shore up his War Chief bona fides, but they're both bad, should have just dumped them both when he had the chance, but he didn't have the courage of his convictions to just go all the way.

I think you're reading a bit much in that conversation, DB. Overdramatizing things not actually said. A presentation of current challenges and issues are not the same thing as a declaration of the imminent collapse of US hegemony, and I'm not seeing either one being triumphalistic about it.DBTrek wrote:ssu wrote: Add to that the closer relationship that Russia is starting to have with Pakistan, and you have the same backers there. It is always entertaining to see how little it takes to get you to think US national honor is being besmirched, though.

It's just another "South Vietnam" proxy, it's not even as stable as that, at some point you're going to leave, and it will immediately collapse and fall to the Taliban and ISIS and whatnot, and you will have literally wasted your time, blood and treasure, to absolutely no purpose at all, the longer you stay, the bigger the "what the fuck were we thinking?" effect after.

Indeed.
Really putting a strain on our coffers.
Really causing a bunch of domestic social upheaval . . . whackin' OBL and dropping the occasional MOAB over there.
It's a miracle we've endured it this long.
How much longer can we possibly sustain it?

Well that's the thing, Americans don't actually care, not actually "non interventionists" at all, so the whole DCF mantra about "Americans don't want this!" is silly, the electorate writ large, couldn't care less, so long as you keep the casualties down, the permanent war is good to go.

Good news everybody! Good news. This just in:
The DOW is still above 20k.
Apparently that MOAB isn't the one that's going to bring everything crashing down for America.
*whew*!

I mightily enjoy coming into these threads where all the usual foreigners are mad about the good ol' USA bringing a tasty new smack of REAL POLITIK to the world's lips. It's fun. Without fail y'all reflexively launch into these elaborate fantasies where every military action of the USA is a disaster, and our comeuppance is just around the corner, and everything is doom n' gloom just-you-wait, blah, blah, blah. I dig the predictability of it. It really makes me laugh.
But that doesn't mean folks are lying about wishing we were non-interventionist. For crissakes we elected the guy who wanted to make other nations pay more for their own security so we could pull back. We elected the guy who suggested it was time to GTFO of NATO. We elected the guy whose catchphrase was "America first".
WTF do you want from us, man? We're non-interventionist. But our government . . . well, those misfit scalawags are imperialist as hell.
Whatchagonnado?

Forty-one percent of respondents say we should stay out of other countries' affairs, the highest percentage ever recorded in the Chicago Council survey. But despite the rising support for disengagement, a solid majority (58 percent) continue to support the projection of American leadership abroad. And 83 percent still believes a strong U.S. leadership role in the world is desirable.
