All of this is about borders. Not even just physical borders but moral, ethical, and even ontological borders. The marxists who now dominate what we call the "left" in America despise borders. They want to just let everything out of the box to see what happens. The nationalists, alt-righters, and traditionalists who make up the opposing coalition believe in maintaining strict borders. They want to keep things in the proper categories. They want to keep America America. They want to maintain definite moral and social boundaries.
There's also people who find themselves mixed up in between, but I think if they really thought about it, they'd shake out on one side or another.
In the meta sense, there's probably good reason to balance those two driving forces, but right now we obviously swung very, very, very fucking too far over to the no-borders area and we have to fix this shit fast or we will pay a hefty price.
Might be said that social issues were used to co-opt liberal and conservative movements and their leaders and shift the focus away from economic issues. Civil rights, poverty, abortion, climate change, marriage, religion, etc are all more easily dealt with a good economy providing a decision living for everyone and a good tax base for the government to do what society wants them too. However providing a decent living, and opportunities for everyone reduces the opportunities for looting for the economic elites, hence the social distractions.

I'd be more certain in my natural tendency against conspiracies & cabals except there seems to be an Impeach-Trump conspiracy going on right now; nothing else really explains it, including some recent gaslighting of this forum. Do you have some links that support your suspicions? (BTW, I agree with you that economic Armageddon is coming because of the rising aristocracy in America & the hollowing out of the Middle Class.)
No links, just my nonstop reading over the years. Although it shouldn't be too hard, and I should bookmark some links as I am like to do a paper in the next few years on the subject.
While I do believe in the existence of "conspiracies & cabals" myself, including the Get Trump movement, a lot of conspiracies are just people talking after dinner, or some such. kinda like "Can you believe this stuff, something should be done. Gimme another beer wont you?" There is also the fact that the CIA, and FBI, are usually on autopilot (well, nowadays we can add the NSA, and the various contractors all under the Department of Homeland Security) looking for what
they think are the threats, not what Congress, or the President, never mind the People think.
Also, if one just goes after the leadership, then one can change a movement. Just think of Martin Luther King, he was always on many reactionaries hate list merely for his work for civil rights. I do not think it a coincidence that he was assassinated after he added economic injustice to his to-do list. I always found it strange that his lieutenants, especially Jesse Jackson, seem to become the Leaders of Misrule for the Black community. Admittedly the attacks they all suffered, including King's murder must have hurt them
badly, at least emotionally. Jackson was right there when King was shot. I would not have been able to endure what they had too. However, it is like the group as a whole became racial blackmailers using a spoils system to maintain their, and their followers influence, and wealth. They did not do want King wanted at all, which was too expand racial, social, economic rights for all, to make Civil Rights for all people. What happened? One could could also look at Gloria Steinem, who worked for the CIA, and used her influence in the Women's Rights Movement to shift it from broad based coalition, which included lower class, poor, and minority women to one that focused on the the desires of upper class white women.
In both these cases, one being murder, and the other bribery, to change the leadership of a movement away from being a stronger broad based one to a weaker narrowly based one, and more towards social issues while downplaying economic ones. Of course, the social and economic are much, though not quite, the same. Note too, that as soon as it looked like a powerful broad based movement that threaten the power, and wealth, of the elites, the co-opting happened with the fight against Communism given as the reason. No Illuminati style conspiracy required. Just some cash, some phone calls, some discrete conversations, and boom.
