Meet Flippy, the robot who flips burgers

Image

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/technology/2 ... -day-work/
“Though we are starting with the relatively 'simple' task of cooking burgers, our proprietary AI software allows our kitchen assistants to be adaptable and therefore can be trained to help with almost any dull, dirty or dangerous task in a commercial kitchen — whether it's frying chicken, cutting vegetables or final plating.”

Cameras and sensors help Flippy to determine when the burger is fully cooked, before the robot places them on a bun. A human worker then takes over and adds condiments.

Re: the robot, who cares? Automation is good for everyone. Now take the shackles off of small business, before our society implodes with unemployed idiots.

We're gonna need to require about 1,200 hours of safety training and state licensing for those human workers until the ketchup and salt robots are ready to step in.

We should never be forced back to the dark days of unsafe food. Clean food on demand is a fundamental human right.

1. that is pretty funny, I somehow didn't notice just how poor that wording is!

2. who cares? increasing automation will directly affect income inequality, the subject of the threat

3. Re: automation is good for anyone, this is obviously vastly simplified and incorrect, although I believe it is net very positive, I did not express a value judgment up front

Well, the buggy whips will continue to be made obsolete. This isn't a new phenomenon, and frankly, shouldn't affect income inequality whatsoever, IMO. Minimum wage work is just as helpful to society as full-on welfare dependence.

We need small businesses to employ all of these idiots and push society forward. Without that, if we continue to glorify the monopolistic megacorps, leaving millions of idiots without even low-wage employment, then yes - I agree - our society is in serious trouble. The military can only take so many troops...

Minimum wage was never meant to be used as a full-time job for anyone. It was meant as a stepping stone to a better position for entry level employees that never had a job in their life.

Kids were meant to get minimum wage jobs, and then progress to a better paying job in the same field, or elsewhere... that has not happened for quite some time.

:D I seem to surprise people regularly around here, which is weird.

I just don't see any benefit to creating "busy work" for idiots, other than to keep them subdued. But this system can not work, hanging by the mercy of a few megacorps. That soulless quarterly grind has brought our society to its knees, yet we continue to pretend it's great for us.

Remove the obstacles to small business, and stop subsidizing the fatcats, then watch magic occur - a functioning economy!

Agreed. And why?

Either a) without min-wage, they would have paid even less, or
b) perhaps they would actually pay more without a min-wage for management boards to look at and consider as "the floor" of their labor costs...

I really don't know the answer to this, but I'm beginning to suspect that with the removal of minimum wage, people would suddenly realize that they need to bargain for their salaries, or create a new business...

Poor Americans can't compete in a global society. Your best bet is stop trying to cling to jobs that used to pay well. There is a lot of opportunity, it just takes a lot time and hard work to gain access to it.
