The example is you claim that "liberty" is not a moral principle. Right on wrong may be subjective, but that your morality is based on the principle of liberty seems purely descriptive. I'm confused why you don't want to call it morality.Martin Hash wrote: ↑Wed Sep 23, 2020 12:01 pmYou’ll have to provide some examples?Hanarchy Montanarchy wrote: ↑Wed Sep 23, 2020 11:46 amYour insistence that your principles are amoral confuses me.
Is life part of your morality? How about truth? Respect? Violence? Masculinity? The Ten Commandments? I have no idea what morals you’re talking about?
If you can claim it but I disagree, that’s subjective. I’m willing to kill you over liberty, that’s objective.

It’s objective.
Give me a list of objective principles and I’ll not think you’re talking about morality.

This 'objective' means 'not moral' bit is the thing that confuses me.

They are exactly as subjective or objective as the principles that underpin them - or, at least, that is what I understand the word means, and I have no reason to redefine the term.Martin Hash wrote: ↑Wed Sep 23, 2020 12:28 pmR U really claiming you don’t think morals R subjective?
You seem to want to disentangle principles from the concept of morality, and I am curious why.

Who needs two words if they mean the same thing? R U a “liberty” is a synonym of “freedom” guy?Hanarchy Montanarchy wrote: ↑Wed Sep 23, 2020 12:50 pmThey are exactly as subjective or objective as the principles that underpin them - or, at least, that is what I understand the word means, and I have no reason to redefine the term.Martin Hash wrote: ↑Wed Sep 23, 2020 12:28 pmR U really claiming you don’t think morals R subjective?

Science has principles, morals don’t.

They don't mean the same thing. If liberty is the principle, then the way you sort actions or arrive at conclusions based on that principle is morality. I think that is a salient distinction that applies to science as well.Martin Hash wrote: ↑Wed Sep 23, 2020 12:52 pmWho needs two words if they mean the same thing? 'Who needs more words' is an Ingsoc-approved sentiment, though.

Vision & sound are inscrutable things, which lead to illusions in images & words; I’m here to clarify misleading interpretations.
Morals are subjective; you can compromise.
Principles are objective; you must enforce them.
We can fudge the morals but your principles better match my principles.

In that case, my initial argument that we should view being principled as a strength rather than a weakness to be abandoned cynically was, as far as I can tell, right in line with your definitions.Martin Hash wrote: ↑Wed Sep 23, 2020 1:23 pmVision & sound are inscrutable things, which lead to illusions in images & words; I’m here to clarify misleading interpretations.
