Wireless networks were compromised a while ago. I remember when the architecture changes came through. It was obvious what was happening. They also snuck some things in with that E911 bill if I remember correctly.


I never worked on the mobile devices themselves, but I suspect that's a lucrative place to exploit, since you could activate cameras and microphones on a whim.

What I noticed was that they broke up the work into compartmentalized projects assigned to different groups of people. Most of it seemed ostensibly legitimate, even if an unwise design choice. But some of the projects were like.. yeah, dude, there's only one reason you'd want to do this..

It's actually better to work directly in government contracting because at least it's honest.

A Mysterious Virus Has Infiltrated America's Drone Program

"The virus, first detected nearly two weeks ago by the military’s Host-Based Security System, has not prevented pilots at Creech Air Force Base in Nevada from flying their missions overseas. Nor have there been any confirmed incidents of classified information being lost or sent to an outside source. But the virus has resisted multiple efforts to remove it from Creech’s computers, network security specialists say. And the infection underscores the ongoing security risks in what has become the US military’s most important weapons system.

“We keep wiping it off, and it keeps coming back,” says a source familiar with the network infection, one of three that told Danger Room about the virus. “We think it’s benign. But we just don’t know.”

Military network security specialists aren’t sure whether the virus and its so-called “keylogger” payload were introduced intentionally or by accident; it may be a common piece of malware that just happened to make its way into these sensitive networks. The specialists don’t know exactly how far the virus has spread. But they’re sure that the infection has hit both classified and unclassified machines at Creech. That raises the possibility, at least, that secret data may have been captured by the keylogger, and then transmitted over the public internet to someone outside the military chain of command."

But despite their widespread use, the drone systems are known to have security flaws. Many Reapers and Predators don’t encrypt the video they transmit to American troops on the ground. In the summer of 2009, US forces discovered “days and days and hours and hours” of the drone footage on the laptops of Iraqi insurgents. A $26 piece of software allowed the militants to capture the video.

Authorities believe the virus was spread by the use of remote drives used by technicians to upload maps and other data to the drone piloting systems, which are “air gapped” from the rest of the Air Force’s systems.

Use of the drives is now severely restricted throughout the military. But the base at Creech was one of the exceptions, until the virus hit. Predator and Reaper crews use removable hard drives to load map updates and transport mission videos from one computer to another. The virus is believed to have spread through these removable drives. Drone units at other Air Force bases worldwide have now been ordered to stop their use.

Hackers from North Korea are reported to have stolen a large cache of military documents from South Korea, including a plan to assassinate North Korea's leader Kim Jong-un.

Rhee Cheol-hee, a South Korean lawmaker, said the information was from his country's defence ministry.

The compromised documents include wartime contingency plans drawn up by the US and South Korea.

They also include reports to the allies' senior commanders.

A proper network admin controls every form of communication internally and externally. Even with SSH security, you can check what is going on inside the pipeline if you know how to do it. With the notification and reports that Intel and the CIA, as well as other forms of alphabet soup, have been interacting together to create backdoors, we as administrators have been finding ways to patch these holes.

We never can protect 100%, but if we create a network like how we want to see the internet protected, the vast majority of issues and situations can be resolved before they even get into, or out of the internal network.

Unless you're willing to sit on a packet sniffer all day, you will never, ever stop them. And even then, they could just super-impose it into the flow.

You can be 100% vigilant, but you're already under-mined before you start. The OS, network hardware, NICs, anything built since 2008 is probably compromised.

But hey, freedom, amirite?

Again, that is exactly what an Assistant Admin is hired to do... sit and watch the packet sniffer and either accept or deny. I have a packet sniffer set up on my network for all input and output and I accept or deny as I deem fit. This is how you secure your network. If you can't accept this level of security to protect millions/billions/trillions of dollars of infrastructure, then you are in the wrong field.

Dr. Eden Wells was in court for a key hearing on other charges, but the hearing was postponed until Nov. 6 after the announcement by Todd Flood of the Michigan Attorney General’s Office. Flood said he’ll offer additional evidence and ask a judge to send Wells to trial on four charges, including involuntary manslaughter and obstruction of justice
