https://www.theguardian.com/politics/20 ... xit-impactDavid Davis, the Brexit secretary, has been threatened with legal action over his refusal to publish 50 secret studies commissioned on the impact of Brexit.
Lawyers acting for the Good Law Project, which is bringing the action jointly with the Green party MEP Molly Scott Cato, wrote to the Brexit department and Treasury on Thursday demanding the release of the documents. They said that failure to do so within 14 days would result in the issue of judicial review proceedings before the high court in an attempt to force their release.
The 50 studies into the impact of Brexit on different industries were commissioned earlier this year but the government has argued that publishing them could damage the UK’s negotiating position with Brussels.
Jolyon Maugham QC, who runs the GLP, said he would not bring the case without believing it had “good, serious prospects” of succeeding. He said he had received legal advice that the government may have a duty under common law to publish the studies into the potential impact on jobs and living standards.
“It seems to me the government’s reluctance to release these studies is born not of its ability to damage our negotiating position but what’s politically expedient,” he said.

Re: Brexit
https://inews.co.uk/essentials/news/pol ... s-speaker/David Davis has been warned by the Commons Speaker that he could be held in contempt of parliament amid anger over his failure to hand over full details of the government’s private assessment of the impact of Brexit.
John Bercow instructed the Brexit Secretary to appear before MPs “very soon indeed” to justify his decision – and said he would “do my duty” if a complaint of contempt was made against the minister.
MPs passed a Commons motion over three weeks ago calling on the government to release to the Brexit select committee documents on the potential economic effect of leaving the European Union.
But the row over the “Brexit papers” degenerated into farce – and accusations of a cover-up – after Mr Davis produced an edited 850-page version of the assessments.

Re: Brexit
Right so this is getting better and better by the day.
It's now reported that the PM is prepared to pay 44 billion pounds ( although she refuses to confirm or deny this ) to leave the EU. Some say the figure could be as high as 55 billion. This is before we can even discuss the terms of leaving ( trade deals etc). However, Ireland has said it will veto ANY exit deal unless Britain guarantees that there will be no hard border between them and Northern Ireland ( which would provide a back door into the UK for all EU citizens.)
So basically the cost of leaving the EU to close our borders and stop paying them money is that we have to leave our borders open and pay them money for upto 40 years. Bearing in mind that the consequences of leaving without a deal are so bad that the Brexit minister refuses to release the information.
I'm starting to think that this was not well thought out.
The one positive is that Nigel Farage is spitting feathers and may well have a stroke.

Re: Brexit
You need to take everything you read about the negotiations with a fair amount of salt at this stage. I guess the 55 billion is what they figure GB ows in already agreed upon obligations. It has nothing to do with the final bill though. I guess Britain wants to get paid for their share in all common EU properties for example. It ain't over till the fat lady sings.Montegriffo wrote:Right so this is getting better and better by the day.

A senior EU Brexit official said: “No agreement has been presented to member states. Agreement has to be on paper, not in papers. We let the negotiators do their work and can’t comment [on] rumors.”
Another senior EU official said: “No, we have no comment to make on this.”
A senior diplomat from one of the founding EU countries said “it’s something fed to the press that has not been translated yet into a negotiating position.”
A U.K. government official familiar with the progress of negotiations said they did not recognize claims that a deal had been done.
“Of course the financial settlement has been discussed this week,” the official said, but added that “nothing is agreed until everything is agreed.”
The U.K. would not “pay a penny” until a deal was finalized covering all aspects of the negotiation, the official said.

Re: Brexit
Not sure what you mean by our share of common EU properties?
The figure ( not yet released ) is to cover contractual agreements including paying into the pension fund for all those Brussels beurocrats, presumably including Farage's MEP pension. The gravy train can't be stopped.
Once agreed to we have to pay no matter how poor the subsequent trade deals are.
Of course none of this was discussed during the campaigning before the referendum. Just lies on a bus and immigration promises that can't be kept.
Still 52 percent of the population got to act on their feelz and that's democracy for you. Mushroom politics, kept in the dark and fed a load of bullshit.

The hubris of those in power revealed by the current communications revolution is what is causing the break up and strain on our institutions.
“Feelz” is simply the response to the political/bureaucratic class showing such distain for Self Determination.
For being above even needing to make a case to the plebs.

Re: Brexit
Thanks. I've not heard of these assets being part of the negotiations but then again virtualy no information is being shared with the public or even parliament. It seems like a small handful of people behind closed doors are bartering away the UK's future with most of the aces in the EU's hands.Hastur wrote:http://bruegel.org/2017/02/the-uks-brex ... abilities/Montegriffo wrote:Not sure what you mean by our share of common EU properties?
