I'm right in there with ya Kath and Dr Youth. It was a great time to be a kid. I see my older siblings as more self centered too.

It has to do with the generation of most parents of your age group, not really your individual circumstances.

You are immersed in a culture and it's not really possible to separate yourself from it. As you grow up, you are surrounded by other kids who have a great influence in how you turn out. All kids are influenced by the parenting style and values of the parents that raise them, but that stuff carries over into interrelationships between kids.

What made Gen X what it was was the fact that most of the parents were Silent Generation types who had a hands-off approach to parenting. Gen X were free range, so-called "latch key" kids. Our parents were largely apolitical and apathetic towards politics in general.

Millinneals were raised predominantly by boomers. Their parents were helicopter parents. Their parents were hugely political and mostly batshit liberal. Competition was removed their lives. Accountability was removed. Everybody got trophies and were told they were all special snowflakes who deserved anything they could dream up. It should be no surprise that generation turned into the failure it is today.

Silent generation parents would say: fuck your feelings.

Boomer parents would obsess over the hurt feelings of their children.

It gets fuzzy around the borders, though. Young Gen Xers often have a silent generation father and a boomer mother. Some older millinneals are the same way. But that fuzzy boundary eventually gave way to all boomer parents and that's when the cancer began.

That's my story, in a nutshell. I prefer the GenX label though, because I grew up with all the 80s kitch. As a parent, I have a strong helicopter urge, but I don't let my kids see it. Rub some dirt on it, and get up - as I quietly inspect everything with an eagle eye.

Problem with generations is there is no exact year. I have far more in common with peeps born in the mid-late 50's than I do with kids who were born in the 80's.
Actually, there is an exact year... what makes a difference between what a whole generation is "stereotyped as" is how they are raised.

Sorry, no. A person born in '66 is not a whole separate generation from a person born in '65. They are generalities, not exacts.

+1

Strauss and Howe recognize this in their book too.

My older sibs were 8 and 10 years older...

So seeing them as in a different culture makes some sense.

They didn't use PCs... they had no gaming systems of any kind... where I grew up with Atari and it's spin offs.
They weren't slam marketed for toys and breakfast cereal in quite the same way.
There was a different cultural gestalt among the youth of their cohort...

Not really sure why they are both such egotists... that probably has more to do with subtle changes in our family over the years.
Mostly where my mom and dad were at... My Dad was a lot busier when they were kids... and my mom was probably less stable...
They weren't helicopter parented, that's for sure.

I was definitely not helicopter parented. The general rule was that if ANY of the moms in the court called, we came running. Other than that, go out, try not to get too bloody and come home when dinner's ready.

Growing up in a court was a lot of fun. There were only seven houses, and we all knew everyone else, except for that one house. There's always one.

But yeah, with no traffic to worry about, we could run around like crazy people, and we did.

We weren’t helicoptered ... but pur parents also didnt have roving SJW patrols looking to turn them into the state if their kid was at a park for an hour alone.
