Trump has no definitive policy whatsoever, on anything. That's how he got elected. He basically blathered talking points all over the map, without specifics, making himself a human Rorschach test for pissed-off Americans.

Close, he's pacing and leading. On issue X -- one of your pet issues -- step one is for him to let you know that he is EVEN MORE concerned about x than even you are. Thus he first agrees with you emotionally -- you might even think "well, I don't actually want to go as far as Trump on X, but I can be certain he is on my side of the issue."

Once you agree emotionally, he can walk it back, but you still know Trump is on your side.

Take immigration: someone might think "well, I dont actually want a giant physical wall" or "I don't really want a religious test" -- but that's OK, you emotionally know Trump is on your side. When he walks it back to the center later, you still emotionally "know" he is one your side and this is all for the best.
