Need to train for that tho, hand loading into the breach in double quick time.

In terms of CQC with a long gun? If they close up to that range; cave their skull in with the butt stroke.

You don't actually need a bayonet, stab them in the throat with the breacher muzzle, forehand smash, backhand smash, stomp them into a paste.
I figure a short-spear makes a decent home defense non-firearm weapon. Got a stabby part. Got a bashing part. Good reach.

What’s your preferred medieval home defense weapon?

Tomahawk and knife.
I've got machete and hatchet.
You can pick up an Assegai for under £100 though...
For legal reasons, we are not threatening to destroy U.S. government property with our glorious medieval siege engine. But if we wanted to, we could. But we won’t. But we could.

It all comes down to resolve, if you go to war, you're gonna have to resolve to run through the steel rain with machine guns shootin' atcha, if you can do that, then you should be able to close up a couple meters on a civilian, and rip their head off like a pez dispenser, c'est le guerre.

Machetes are really good too, but I don't think really anything beats the tomahawk in terms of versatility. Machates are brutal in slashing, but they offer you very little ability to control your opponent. You can do all sorts of wicked shit with a tomahawk. It can be used for slashing, stabbing, blocking, manipulating arms and legs, and so on.

Paired with a knife, your tomahawk is more like the free hand, but extended, in which you manipulate your opponent by hooking his arms, leg, and neck in order to draw him in to be cut up by the knife.

Pansy waist like Grumpy, scared of his own gun? He ain't no spartan, and putting a spear in his hand ain't gonna make him one, he doesn't have the resolve, he's not conditioned to close with and destroy, he won't accept that it's all a high risk gambit, so he wouldn't go for the throat at the breach.

Hence; .357 snub nosed revolver, for the equalizer.

Need a bit of space for the machete, if I had an intruder in the truck I'd go for the hatchet and a chef's knife.
A Zulu spear and shield hanging on the wall would be nice though.

He should just get a handgun and something like an American bulldog. A 120 lbs Ambull walking around the house in plain sight would do a lot to ward off common buglers anyway. A German shepherd wouldn't be a bad choice either. Because he has all these kids running around, take the dog to Schutzhund training early and often.

A chef's knife is the most brutal knife out there if you ask me. It's very thin and very sharp and at least eight inches in length. Slashing something like that is going to be fucking awful.

Nah, don't put the dog into the breach, it's not a police dog, I'd make sure my dogs were out of the way, I'm the big dog round here, and if you've got the .357 pocket hammer, no need to put your dogs in the line of fire.

A family dog is not an attack dog by nature, police dogs are specially selected and trained. You've conditioned your dog not to attack people, so odds are it won't, it will just bark and posture, and end up getting shot.

Just having a large dog in the house is going to ward off probably most intruders, dude.

American bulldog is going into the breach whether you like it or not, though. Those dogs love their families and would fight to death to defend them. Great with kids. Dumb as a box of rocks, but incredibly protective.

When I am walking mine around, if somebody is being aggressive with their kids, I have to turn around and go the other way.

Bulldogs are bred to fight other dogs, there's a good reason why you don't see the police using pit fighting dogs, a bulldog ain't gonna do shit, it's not going for the jugular, it's not trained to kill a man, even attack dog breeds like Sheppards and Malinois, 9 of 10 of them are rejected, because they can't do the job, it's not actually in a dogs nature to attack an adult person, takes a whole lot of intervention and re-conditioning to get them to do that.

The bulldog will bark, it will nip at the legs, but it's not going to take a full sized man down like a police dog.
