Well, the sequence of provocation went like this, some liberal polticians got elected in Dixie by a narrow margin, then, in the interest of pandering to special interest groups, they asserted a mandate to remove a statue of Robert E. Lee in the heartland of Dixie. I reject that they had a mandate to do that, and I view that as a blatant provocation, which of course incited the good ol' boys to rally to the colors of the Army of Northern Virginia, and rightly so.
