Re: SARS Pt. 2 - Wuhan Boogaloo
We're both in healthcare, different places. I'm IT, so I can work from home. Her original job isn't necessary with so much closing down. Therefore, her original duties are pretty much on hold. A lot of people where she works have jobs that no longer apply in this environment, so they have been put on hold. They don't want to to pay them all to be at home doing nothing, so they came up with new jobs, like checking people coming into the building. Taking temps, asking questions about travel. The building she's at is not the hospital, but it does have patients coming in. Any personal contact is a risk, so I'm not happy about this new job. It was this or use her vacation up, or quit. This could go n for a while, so we don't want her to quit right now. At least they give them some protective gear. Still, one wrong encounter and we could all be screwed.

Update from my side of the fence:
They've reduced manpower at our normal precinct and the satellite precinct that I'm currently assigned to. I work four days, off five in a row. Compared to last week, this place is a ghost town, and it was already a ghost town. My job is to sit in the back of the shoot house, and sit here. My manager is in denial about the seriousness of the situation. Keeps wanting me to do LinkedIn learning courses for no reason other than to "show we're doing something." As far as I'm concerned, every step outside my apartment is one step into the hot zone. My real work responsibilities are: Make sure internet stays on at satellite precinct. That's literally what the officers here care about, and they have a more realistic view of things than my manager. I try to leave this little room in the shoot house as little as possible. When I do, I'm wearing gloves, which I discard outside my office.
Situation at home is fine. I am in a rural community, so I can still take the kids outside. On Friday we hung out outside in little lawn chairs while my 5 year old did some of her school work (we've been homeschooling her since before the pandemic), and my two year old played on his tricycle or in the dirt. My exposure risk until the new baby comes is very low. I have goggles and a mask if need be. We've been doing pick up orders at the grocery store. Saturday, did the same thing, only we laid in the grass together. Last night, my wife and I had a date in the living room, eating popcorn and playing a couple's version of the newlywed game (not a euphemism, btw).
I've had a lot of time to think over the last weekend. I'm beginning to see a silver lining in all this panic. Not only will property values probably drop, but I will use my incoming Trump bucks to pay for a new rifle of some sort. Eye-ing an AK because they're relatively low maintenance, but I'd like to have some suggestions on that front. The gun stores are staying open, because it's the South. I can order some ammo online. I already have a shotgun. I could also stand to have some new PPE. I'd liked to have a mask that's a little more robust than the disposable n95 I was assigned by the department. Also, I think some very interesting political outcomes will happen should things get bad enough. I'm going to be eyeing South Carolina...

Also:
Received some information from a family contact in healthcare. They're telling the healthcare workers that the first symptom of the Bug is a sore throat. They're encouraging all of their workers to drink things that discourage mucus formation (i.e. hot drinks, gargling with lemon juice, salt water gargling, etc.). I've been adding lemon juice to my black coffee. Tastes pretty good, gives you some vitamin C.
I go to church with a guy who is ex-CIA (probably still CIA). When he goes dark, I'll know we're past the point of no return.
EDIT: Can we do something about the media? Anything?
