I went to Sanibel with my cousin 2 years ago. It was brutally hot and I drank a fifth of rum that day, so I passed out until it was nightfall and then walked on the beach. I saw 2 guys fishing for sharks. I asked him if there were a lot of sharks in Sanibel and he said: "You wouldn't believe how many." Guy said he already caught a three foot one that night and threw it back in. I don't know what his endgame with the sharks was, because I thought they were protected and you couldn't just fish for them.GrumpyCatFace wrote:Fuck. For one thing, I couldn't stand the accent for long.
Another key factor is that the family is all located either in Florida, or here. Florida's destined to be a sinking toilet bowl, so this is probably the most realistic option for me.
I loved fishing on Sanibel island, and the easy tail on the beach, and that's it. The heat, the insane drugged or snobby people, the bugs, the fail-grass... no thank you.

As far as I know, they're free game. I doubt that many people cook with them or anything, but it's cool to say you caught a shark.heydaralon wrote:I went to Sanibel with my cousin 2 years ago. You are crazy.

Nukedog could live on 13 acres of mountain fortress for just three times what he paid for his van.
I have seriously thought about just getting one of those fucking air-conditioned yurts and lived in one of those until I could save up enough to some Amish house kit to build on some land like that.

If the power goes out, and ROL disappears, Orlando might as well be renamed to Thunderdome.

No argument from me. But homesteading is 1,000x harder without some sort of family support. You need to have the extended fam nearby - at least some portion of it - or you'll end up trying to mount a rescue operation for them during a Collapse.Speaker to Animals wrote:You are crazy.

Yeah, I don't pretend to know exactly how hard it would be.
If I were able to get the land, I'd start pretty small and build up while keeping logs and reading as much as I can.
There are smaller lots for like 30k. I might be able to get a loan for that and just remain in the condo while working the land. When the land is paid off, sell the condo and use what's left as a down payment on a house.
I kind of want ten.acres, though. Especially since mountains mean less land to grow food.

I was thinking about how to actually build a house, while keeping the one we have, and concluded that it's basically impossible.Speaker to Animals wrote:GrumpyCatFace wrote:No argument from me. If your state allows for it, you could go the cob route. Building codes in general make houses very expensive, but not as likely to kill your whole family in a fire.

I wonder if I could get about 10 acres of land and build one of those cob homes on it for about 100k.

Probably a lot less than that, if you keep it small. Not really an option, when working with a normie and kids, though.Speaker to Animals wrote:I wonder if I could get about 10 acres of land and build one of those cob homes on it for about 100k.
Might be a better plan for a single guy.
