If you think about it, it's not really a big deal. Nations on the other side of the world dealing with a problem on the other side of the world. One would think that the big deal would have been if the US once again was dealing with a problem who's neighbors had neglected to remedy.

If the US would not have any stake in this, your logic would be correct.

But hell, it's goddam having troops fighting there, has been bombing there too. So yeah, the US is "a bit" involved here.

Hence your argument isn't at all valid. It's really a big middle finger waived by all other participants in the face of uncle Sam, if you don't get it.

Yeah.... If only the West was as tough against Islam as a country that allows sharia law, has a leader that considers Islam closer to the Orthodox faith than Catholicism, where Islam is giving a place of respect in the constitution and where even its clerics point out that while they're off to holy war, it is definitely not a holy war against Islam.

Even Sweden's not that nice about Islam.

But as for the story itself, a shame if the Russian Orthodox Church starts to care more about political power than the spiritual wellbeing of its congregations, but from an individualistic perspective, I like it. Spiritual support, especially as vocally positive as that, can only help boost morale for the Russians fighting in Syria.

The Soviet Union dissolved in December of 1991 and the U.S. has normalised relations with many of the countries that came from the break-up. The White House has reset its relationship with Russia.
