Georgia teacher arrested after firing gun in school, police say
Cops: Teacher in custody after barricading self in classroom with gun, firing shot
Now, before we consider making government school teachers into some kind of impromptu SWAT team, let's consider the larger issue of the very nature of the government school / indoctrination / child-prison system, and as a case study, let's look at one of those proposed armed guards who gets permanent tenure as a union-protected made-man:
Some jobs are so important only the state can do them, eh?
Oh, but why do some people want to arm teachers? What could go wrong?
Oh.. and this doesn't help your side one bit. That teacher was NOT supposed to bring a gun to school. The school was a gun-free zone. He brought it anyway and fired off rounds. Furthermore, the school system kept on a mentally-deranged man as a teacher around children. Not something a pro-government school, pro-gun control person should really want to bring up.
The guy was a teacher with a gun that had a nervous breakdown. And you still want Kindergarten teachers to pack heat in a room full of like 30+ 5-6 year-olds?

Obviously, some kids would be fine, most parents at least want them to be learned. But there would be a massive underclass of illiterate beggars - pretty much all of the lower classes, and some middle-class kids. We'd bring on total Idiocracy within a generation.
I just can't picture everyone being able to afford private schooling. Not even with vouchers, there are going to be parents that still can't afford private school for these kids. This will just increase in illiteracy and Idiocracy:
Weird how we managed to educate people for centuries before the government started mandate our kids go to their indoctrination centers. Including the poorest Catholic immigrants. Strange..

No. Perhaps you didn't listen carefully: I want to shut down the government schools.

Wierd that today we have literacy rates that are way higher than those "good old days" before mandatory schooling.

Yeah, not really an option. We need young adults able to do more than turn a crank in a factory.
We also can't afford to compete technologically, with only the rich kids reaching an acceptable university-entrance level of knowledge.

Well, a cursory examination of a 19th century grammar book shows you are full of shit.
We have lost literacy, not gained it.

This guy makes a good argument for there actually being a decline in literacy based on Common Sense. Most adults in America today do not possess the reading comprehension to understand a book written for the common man in the 18th century.

This was an eighth grade exam from the 19th century.
This is an eighth grade exam question from Common Core:

It looks to me like government schools took a body of students who were far more literate, and in about five generations produced students who are functionally illiterate.
Students were most literate when government schools were first mandated and the government tried to shut down the Catholic schools. As time went on, the government school students grew steadily less literate than their parochial counterparts.
Now something as basic bitch as a Catholic school once was is considered posh education compared to state indoctrination. Go figure.

Mandatory education does works - Look at these illiteracy rates by clicking on the link below:
For the later part of this century the illiteracy rates have been relatively low, registering only about 4 percent as early as 1930. However, in the late 19th century and early 20th century, illiteracy was very common. In 1870, 20 percent of the entire adult population was illiterate, and 80 percent of the black population was illiterate. By 1900 the situation had improved somewhat, but still 44 percent of blacks remained illiterate. The statistical data show significant improvements for black and other races in the early portion of the 20th century as the former slaves who had no educational opportunities in their youth were replaced by younger individuals who grew up in the post Civil War period and often had some chance to obtain a basic education. The gap in illiteracy between white and black adults continued to narrow through the 20th century, and in 1979 the rates were about the same.
