I was talking to my dad about this scenario just a couple nights ago. I looked around my neighborhood, said, "Every house you see has guns. The first thing we would do is form a local militia. That would work initially then some of the guys would be called up to their National Guard units.
They'll protect other families like they want their family to be protected. National Guard shoots looters. Internet won't go down, there will be plenty of food, just nothing exotic. Everybody will plant something. After 6 months, the National Guard will come home. Things will be secure & normal, and life will slowly ramp up again. The first thing new leadership will do is put the kibosh on diversity, et al. Conservatism will reign."

If by diversity you mean ethnic genocide by slowly repopulating America with brown people that sounds correct. You're wrong about the militias though. The national guard shows up first.

All depends on how fast hyper-inflation sets in. If it's as bad as I think, your internet bill will triple, along with food, gas, and rent. If you still have a job (or are wealthy), your mortgage just got very cheap. If your boss stops giving emergency raises, which he will, then your problems get worse. And worse.

The middle class will be fine for a while, surviving on savings and whatever they hoard, but they'll be at the mercy of the scum around their enclaves. National Guard = Martial Law, which means everything is fair game.

Nah dude. I've been through Katrina and Harvey now. It only takes like a day and the presence stays for weeks. Militias lol. Never seen one in my life.

I think once it gets to the point where we muster to the neighborhood militia, there won't be any putting that genie back in the bottle. The state will lose it's monopoly of violence and we go back to Constitutional government in which communities defended themselves.

Maybe after a few generations it will start to slide back towards complacency. I don't know. But I have a feeling once you put the fear of God into people, and they have to form up to defend their communities to stay alive, there's really no way to go back for those people, personally.

Think of what the Great Depression did to people psychologically. What we are discussing here is actually a lot scarier than that. The Great Depression wasn't even all that scary. People were feeding the hungry, law and order pretty well remained in effect.

I don't think this diversity/homogeneity stuff will be a factor either. People want to live. I don't give a shit if Pedro is Mexican and Jamal is black as long as they keep their watch and we look out for one another. If this happens, we fall back into military rules, and the unit doesn't care what color your skin is.

They called in the Air Force to back up the Katrina thing actually. I mean if you want to talk about systemic breakdown go on with your bad self but it's a long way away from NG being called in and whatever the fuck a militia is doing their thing. If you think the internet is going to stay up while militias are running the place lol. I don't think the rest of your premise is wrong really but I think you are underestimating how well prepared the federal government is.
