They didn't want other Europeans here. The timeline of immigration in NYC: the English came and took New Amsterdam. The Germans came and the English weren't thrilled. The Irish came and the Protestants didn't want them taking their jobs. The Africans were freed and a massive southern diaspora to the East took place; no one wanted them taking white people's jobs. The Italians came here and the Irish didn't want them taking their jobs. The Jews came here and the previous European immigrants were certain they were stealing all the opportunities. Then the Latinos came here and the Italians didn't want them taking their jobs, and on and on. The reality is that immigrants built the greatest city in the world, successively, while all believing that the people putting the next block on the pile were destroying what the previous waves had built.
