Anyone else think the taliban is kind of good for Afghanistan?

The Taliban is good for the Taliban and their Pashtun clans. Not so much for all the other ethnic groups in Afghanistan. Afghanistan is a multi-ethnic mess. They can only be united by an external enemy. This will be a long, bloody civil war.

Their main income, fueling the war, is opium that is exported to be turned into heroin. (Thank you, CIA). I don't know how the heroin market has been influenced by the much stronger and cheaper synthetic opioids like fentanyl coming out of China.

There will be a new refugee crisis. The EU is quickly erecting a barrier towards Belarus, since Lukasjenko is trying to get even by opening his borders to The Horde.

Yeah true. I think Afghanistan is always a low level civil war with all the clans. I heard the Taliban is actually decent at building coalitions. It's their time to shine now if they want to put something together and make it work.

Trying to win wars with SpecOps is stupid, futile and a waste of time. In the 20 year history of GWOT, the only real victories we had came from pretty conventional warfare. COIN failed, Operators failed, the Generals failed.

The Taliban is winning because they are closing with and killing their enemies. They are not playing fuck, fuck SpecOps, spymaster games. They are just going force on force, that's how you win.

I said from the beginning we should have glassed where they were.

The Taliban are the Pashtun people. 15 million in Afghanistan and 40 million in Pakistan. Good plan.

Cheaper than the trillion+ and destroyed US family lives we have created over 20 years. We could easily have cornered them into a village or the mountains and dropped a MOAB or anything as devastating several times to make them realize that we aren't fukcing around.

When it comes to war, you go to win, not to come to a draw, unless you are the weaker force that is.

We should have steamrolled over them, paved new streets with their bones and left. I am seriously tired of this 1/2 assed variant we have been doing. We don't win the hearts and minds of people, fuck them. Our military is our sword and shield, not a carpenter or a teacher... except in one instance... don't fuck with the US.

in terms of glassing itself, that's only effective against industrial targets and dense populations

dropping a hydrogen bomb on the deserts of Afghanistan wouldn't make much difference

you are vastly overrating the effects of firepower

Afghanistan is already a wasteland, there's nothing to bomb there, they don't even have rubble to bounce

it's a bunch of goat herders in a huge empty space, it's not even a military target

you're invoking Curtis LeMay in WWII, but there is no Germany nor Japan to bomb

that was industrial warfare, but Afghanistan has no industrial targets to hit

you needed a base to be able to deploy DEVGRU Red Squadron from when you found him

so could have just made a deal with the Taliban
