What are the next military budget discussions even going to sound like? I mean.. what are we spending for? We need to find some aliens or something, because those Russians getting split roasted on the road to Kyiv probably don't warrant $750+ billion annual defense budget.
You got it all wrong StA - we need to spend more bc the Bear has show how dangerous it is
What we need are metal suits that we can put on Ukrainian infantry that allow us to drop them from space anywhere, including into Russia. If I were Joe Biden, I would announce that today.

We will drop power armored-Ukrainian troopers from fucking space onto your Russian villas.

Maybe we need better missile defense systems. I dunno.
What…. Our military spending is completely absurd, and unnecessary?

Ps: good to see you back sir.

You’ll spend. If you spent when you thought you’d won history, then you’ll spend harder now you know you haven’t.
That’s not a dig, just that expect bipartisan support on the next bill

but if the Pax Americana has in fact fallen

that is America is the sole guarantor of global security

which I think it has at this point

then that is where we are back to

to before the Second World War

back to the 1930's

except with about 12,000 hydrogen bombs in play, 3,000 on hair trigger alert

1939 meets 1983

I guess the point I am trying to make here is this.. what if this literally is the Pax Americana? What if it came true, and the calculus for Russia is pretty simple: fuck off into oblivion or escalate this into an eventual nuclear confrontation?

They are completely fucked here. There is no easy way back from this except mass militarization and eventual war. But I could well see these bankers and corporatists already being several steps ahead of them here. This isn't the 1930s. We all know how that trick works now.

The problem with Pax Americana is this: what the fuck is America? It's just a glove that is used to control various power structures, including vast military and intelligence apparatuses. But who's hands are in the glove at any given time depends on money, power, gamesmanship, etc. I would point out that Russia is most of all fucked right now because a small group of global capitalists and bankers decided to wage an economic war against them and now the Russian people are going to be devastated in a way that the post-WW1 German people once were. And this wasn't the Russian people's fault.

The Russians are fucking outrageous right now, but I think every person on this Earth should be concerned with how glibly and smoothly those weasels just destroyed the Russian economy. The media writes about this as if "the West" did it, or "western powers" did it. That's not what happened. Corporations colluded to it. Banks and corporations did it. They can do that to us too.

On a deeper level, it almost looks like a coup against the nation state going on. But, really, I don't know for sure. So much of what we read is bullshit, and so much of what is happening is kept secret.

But I would point out that we have seen corporate power quickly taking over government power during this pandemic everywhere, and what we just witnessed is not at all outside of that trendline. If the world does not want corporate rule, they had better start discussing what was done to Russia.

What is the saying?
History doesn’t repeat but it rhymes

Right now we have Russia and China, instead of Germany and Japan.

Not quite the same but also not that different

the Soviets were an adversary at the time too

in terms of China at the time

that was the Ukraine of the day

that is the first stand that America made

siding with the Chinese against Imperial Japan, by sheer popular will of the American electorate

culminating with the oil embargo

which initiated the all out Japanese attack on both British & American forces in the Pacific

I would say that Russia has just unified the entire Western World

they have breached UN Article 51 in contravention of the Nuremberg Principles

they have gone father than the Soviets ever did

and they have done it on the central front in Europe

so the shit is hitting the fan now

Speaker is right, this has only just begun, doesn't even matter what the outcome in Ukraine now

I agree. When people tend to think of WWII
well it really actually started in the Pacific

on 18 September 1931 with the Japanese invasion of Manchuria
Well technically that is sort of true but honestly that was a regional war that became a global conflict. IMO WWII started when England and France became involved fighting the axis powers. Some think it only became WWII when Japan attacked the USA and tied the fighting across the world together.

Splitting hairs here. The overall observation that World Wars roll out slowly and is not a flip of a switch is a valid point that we seem to agree on.
