That's because you don't have to understand any math behind it. What a fucked up class.Speaker to Animals wrote:GrumpyCatFace wrote:That looks like an incredibly fucked-up way to learn it.Speaker to Animals wrote:
In a computer science undergrad program, most have to take a database design course. That doesn't mean building a database in MySQL but, rather, how you build so.ething like MySQL. The math is pretty interesting, but not really easy.
What is cool is how we were able to get something as deep and nuanced as databases to the point where we can build these things from just a scripting language, simply.
You have to understand the math beneath it.
It bored the shit out of me.

You do if you want to design and build a database system.

Unless you're designing a new language, no. Absolutely not.Speaker to Animals wrote:You do if you want to design and build a database system.
I've never touched MySQL, but in SQL, there's no use for advanced math like that. At most, you may need to consider datatype size on the hard disk, for really, really big tables.

Might be good for custom tuning an ECU. Mega Squirt already does that though. Back when I wanted to boost my little shoe box I was going to try and do all the data logging and tuning myself. Not legal in this state for road use but whatever. I was already buying my inspection stickers anyway for illegal tint. Ohio doesn't have inspections though. Say you wanted to run your farm truck on propane and do a custom tune yourself. That kind of language would come in handy. Or you can buy a Mega Squirt.

You don't understand what I meant. If you want to build a database server from scratch you need to understand the mathematics.GrumpyCatFace wrote:Unless you're designing a new language, no. Absolutely not.Speaker to Animals wrote:You do if you want to design and build a database system.

It's similar to how you need to know a lot of mathematics to build an animation package, but not so much to use it to create an animation.

False. Ohio has required emissions testing.Nukedog wrote:Might be good for custom tuning an ECU. Mega Squirt already does that though. Are you talking about the physical server, or the VM? Either way, still no math needed. Just estimate the disk space, threading, and memory required. Typically "whatever we can afford".Speaker to Animals wrote:You don't understand what I meant. Really? Not in Lima county then. I know some Texas counties don't require it. I was running open pipes in Lima. No inspection just insurance iirc was all that I needed to get it registered. That was a great car btw. 86 turbo coup with the 5 speeds mated to a built high compression 302 on a 8.8" rear locker. Thing screamed.GrumpyCatFace wrote:False. Actually, I think you're right. It varies by county, and isn't a state law.Nukedog wrote:Really? Not in Lima county then. I know some Texas counties don't require it. Tbf the refinery put off enough emissions to not need to worry about red necks with open pipes. Half the town had cancer already. Honestly though, I think it's the water supply. The refinery is around a hundred years old kind of.
