We’re at the point in our development as a species where more and more research can no longer be done by individuals or even corporations, e.g. LHC.
StA and I had a discussion, back on DCF, about the workability of an economy soely focued on major scientific experiments (picked unfortunately by the government) where all sub industires would still be privately operated.
Basically - an economy based solely around human advabcement.

The way forward into space is for the national government to take the lead and coalesce corporations under a single organizational framework. You still need the government for laws, regulations, and to infuse the project with enormous sums of cash. Corporations could choose to involve themselves based on immediate contractual profits, but also the ability to position themselves to exploit space resources early, and for whatever innovations they can adapt to Earth markets.
My only contention here is that the silly concepts of intellectual property should not apply in space. People need access to whatever works to get the job of space colonization accomplished. But corporations can still participate in the colonization effort, patent what they developed as contributions, and sell in markets here (which arguably would be like 99% of their business anyway).
Colonization requires a economic system no matter what. Once we start mining asteroids, I think a lot of the economic models we have today will become defunct just because of a lack of scarcity.
Which is really the problem with everything economic, in my opinion. It's all based on scarcity. Scarcity is becoming scarce, ironically. They are trying to prop up the system by creating artificial scarcities, and people are getting pissed, and talking about socialism in response. The musical chairs job market is also a product of us transitioning out of scarcity. We produce more with less work due to technological advances. We don't technically need everybody working in capitalist markets to produce a luxury standard of living for most Americans. I think a good solution to this is to set our sights on space colonization and put people to work at that.

Obliterate IP law first. Totally erase it.
After that, just kick back and watch the show.
