In the South, black people lived in your actual house, in the North, they weren't allowed to even live in the same neighborhood.

I really thought the fact that civil rights for black Americans taking a full century to come about after the civil war would dampen a lot of this fairy tale bullshit about the north being a 21st century land of racial integration in 1865.

The north became a much better place within approx. 50 years, hence the Great Migration. There were relatively enlightened cities before then in the north as well.

My hometown has stories where many community leaders were abolitionist and there were rumors that there were buildings that were pit stops on the Underground Railroad but there was a massive flood in 1889 that washed away any evidence of those stories. We only really have records and it showed that our county had the highest volunteer enlistment during the war (it was like 7,000 men and another 7,000 just waiting to replace those 7,000 men, etc...). The thing is though the mill boss was a Republican so he did make sure that his company and men were going to serve the war for both man power and also in raw materials.

No, not most, but you may remember that New Jersey was the last Northern state to abolish slavery.

Bear in mind, the whole reason that Reconstruction failed, was that as soon as the public found out that the purpose of the war had been to give Africans American citizenship, the public mood swung violently back in the opposite direction and the Southron Democrats were back in the game.

Nah, in y opinion, Reconstruction failed because of a) there wasn't a solid consensus on what to do with/how to punish the South and b) the Republicans gave it up so Hayes can become president.

"Their" project? "They" would have supported Hibernia before Liberia if it meant getting foreign influences out of the great northern cities.

White flight in the north was both a function of racism and sharply rising crime rates, which had much more to do with problems of poverty than race per se. Imo government programs of the time simply concentrated the poverty and thus upped the crime rate.

White people in the north now are dividing by class, not race. This seems to be happening everywhere in the country, but it's interesting how it happens structurally. Gated communities in the south; high property taxes in the north.
