Your computer required gallons of crude oil shipped around with more fossil fuels then defined into polymer chains to make the plastic case, chip cases, etc. Then more barrels of oil to create diesel fuel for the machinery to dig up, refine, process, etc, the silicon chips both in your computer and the solar cells, on top of all the electricity (largely by fossil fuels) to chemically process/etch them, more transportation fuel, etc.

How much energy/pollution went in to making those solar panels, shipping to you, etc? How much would that take to put those panels on everyone's roof? How does that compare to the energy/pollution required to build/run a natural gas electrical generation plant?

All of that has to calculate into your "carbon footprint" (and the "footprint" of everything you consume).

Very difficult to truly calculate.

Add to that the fact I've only ever owned two computers and only replace my phones when they have worn out not everytime a new version with a 1% increase in memory comes on the market.

Where do you think recycled timber originally comes from? Why should you get to use it for your hobby? That recycled timber could be used to build homes for the poor you selfish bastard.

Meanwhile, the place we get our Christmas tree from plants new trees to replace the ones cut. So essentially they are recycled. Well, double recycled because the old tree gets chopped up and used for mulch. Circle of life.

Monte also loves F1. Has for decades. We should not be allowed to have a Christmas tree or send cards to our loved ones but he is free to support a hobby that involves massive amounts of wasted fuel, tires, etc...

I went down to visit my daughter at her college the other day. We spent a couple of hours at the fantastic library on campus; her studying for finals, me geeking out digging up some prizes from the stacks.

I'm sad now that I participated in a tree and resource killing ritual. In 2018, all that paper is a stupendous waste.

We need experts to make decisions for us on what books are essential, along with all the Christian/pagan greeting cards and precious USPS resources; not to mention all the buggy whip and trinket waste.

Does your daughter go to the University of Tennessee? My mom graduated from there back in the day. She is a Vols fan, although it gets conflicted for her when they play the Gators, which is where I went. To be honest, she follows SEC football far more than I do. I'm optimistic about the medium term prospects of the Gators though. I see some good things happening in the upcoming season.
