My computer and phone are 100% charged by solar panels on the roof of my low impact truck home but do carry on with your Christmas lecture...
Do your solar panels also power the entire infrastructure of the internet?
... and “low impact” fossil fuel burning, oil dripping, exhaust pumping, rubber shredding, chemical leaking, “truck home”.
Indeed!
I can only control my own electricity consumption, unfortunately, and my home is low impact in comparison to you wasteful house dwellers.
I am confident that my lifestyle has a much lower carbon footprint than yours.
Your computer required gallons of crude oil shipped around with more fossil fuels then defined into polymer chains to make the plastic case, chip cases, etc. Then more barrels of oil to create diesel fuel for the machinery to dig up, refine, process, etc, the silicon chips both in your computer and the solar cells, on top of all the electricity (largely by fossil fuels) to chemically process/etch them, more transportation fuel, etc.
How much energy/pollution went in to making those solar panels, shipping to you, etc? How much would that take to put those panels on everyone's roof? How does that compare to the energy/pollution required to build/run a natural gas electrical generation plant?
All of that has to calculate into your "carbon footprint" (and the "footprint" of everything you consume).
Very difficult to truly calculate.
