As opposed Huffpo Himbo's assertion that the threat is internal collapse of Western Civilization instigated by Moscow, by what means again? Twitter trolling the Democrat party, and exposing NATO's inherent lack of resolve by challenging its authority to intervene in the Russian Near Abroad?

As if the Democrat Party and/or NATO are actually paragons of Western Civilization, which, seems a little overstated to say the least.

Never mind that Moscovite Russia is actually Westernized and has been since at least Peter the Great, and is in fact an arguably greater paragon of Western Civilization than either the Democrat Party or NATO.

The Rus actually came from Scandanavia, Czar Nicolas II was Queen Victoria's grandson, the Soviets were our stalwart Allies in the Second World War, I missed the part where the Russians were a buncha Confucian Chinaman from Shanghai and/or bent on the overthrow if their own Greco-Roman Judeo-Christian origins.

I was simply surprised that the Russians would have gone to this much trouble... and appear to continue to do so.

Their hope, I suppose, is to continue to fragment coalitions, to divide their foes and gain advantage.

I have no idea how effective these strategies are, but I highly doubt they will amount to much...

As for accidental nuclear calamities... they are an ever-present menace... but one we have gotten used to.

A) a little surprised Smitty thinks so low of putin. Not necessarily challenging it, my knowledge of modern Russian is weak.

B) dsl’s concern with how old civ is, is wierd. You have to watch out for that shit these days. Obviously watched some YouTube video or podcast that was raving about it. No one who studied such a think would argue that China is younger than Confucius, but it is an easy throw away comment to talk about how young Qin unification is as though that means something that it doesn’t.

Bear in mind, to assert that Putin is actually running the place as the central authority, would be an inherent indictment of Putin as being totally ineffective, since nothing in Russia works properly and it is rather a complete and total basket case.

I simply assert that the total ineffectiveness is inherent to the ostensible authority being a Potemkin village facade.

Also bear in mind, I'm not saying that the zombie Soviet war machine is running things neither, they're not running Putin, Putin's not running them, nobody is running anybody, all the different power centers have their own agendas, which often run in parallel, but which is still a free for all at the end of the day, they all do their own things, and those things don't necessarily have to come into conflict, since the agendas are all in very different spheres.

The zombie Soviet war machine lies in wait for its opportunity to wreak vengeance upon America, Putin clings tenaciously to his cushy gig, it's not mutually exclusive in any way.

There's a lot that Putin has achieved. Starting the war again with the Chechens after
blowing up few apartment buildings to motivate Russians to fight a war worked for the guy.

- Ended the political instability of the Yeltsin era
- Ended the Chechen insurgency
- Ended the influence of oligarchs over the Kremlin and put into
prison or forced into exile those with own political aspirations.
- after oil prices went up, russia did see an economic rebound
from 2000 to 2008 with GDP growth being over 5%, best year
10%.

Then of course came first the Russo-Georgian war, but the economy (and relations to the West) recovered from that, but the economy went downhill from the intervention in Ukraine. But then he got Crimea, which looks good in the resume even if reality there's not much gained from that.
