Touche, I guess I walked straight into that one.Smitty-48 wrote:Business is business, if she didn't sell them to the Chileans, the Americans would have, you complained about unemployment, well, take the job and shut the fuck up then.Montegriffo wrote:She did however sell arms and riot control vehicles to make it easier for Pinochet to quell rebellion.Smitty-48 wrote: it's not for the British Crown to install a revolution in South America, which, Thatcher never did.
What would you have Thatcher do, bring Allende back from the grave and reinstall him? Why? The Soviets would have been back in Chile, and the Americans would have crushed the Chileans for it, so what would that achieve?
I mean, expecting arms dealers to exhibit any ethical restrictions on who they sell their wares to is naive. That's how Argentina ended up with French Exocet missiles to sink Royal Navy ships with after all. Also how French chemical weapons ended up in the hands of Saddam Hussein. Hoping that the UK could be better than France in who it sells weapons to is a mere pipe dream.
For legal reasons, we are not threatening to destroy U.S. government property with our glorious medieval siege engine. But if we wanted to, we could. But we won’t. But we could.

What is demonstrably true is that you are a bitch of the leftist variety that lacks a sense of humor, and has a self importance of a leftist, that wants to censor all views that you don't agree with. That caricature about The Eu and ISIS extends from that. Deal with it, bitch.Montegriffo wrote:I can repeat ad nausium that I object to the federalisation of Europe and only favoured staying in because of the undoubted economical benefits of the single market but all certain people hear is that I want to give up sovereignty to Brussels and open the borders to Islamic terrorists.
At the end of the day it does not seem to matter what I write as low info shitheads have decided that I'm a raving commie who is an unpatriotic ISIS supporter. Luckily there are a few here who actually read what I write and know all that is demonstrably untrue.

The Cold War was a war, the Bolsheviks of Latin America were with the other side of the Iron Curtain, it wasn't a choice between Pinochet and Clement Attlee, it was a choice between Pinochet and Yuri Andropov, Yuri Andropov would have been better for Chile? I think not. The Chileans were universally on side with Yuri Andropov and against Pinochet? I think not.Montegriffo wrote:Touche, I guess I walked straight into that one.Smitty-48 wrote:Business is business, if she didn't sell them to the Chileans, the Americans would have, you complained about unemployment, well, take the job and shut the fuck up then.Montegriffo wrote:

As for Argentina, they were not the enemy until they were, no quarrel with Buenos Aires, until they landed upon South Georgia, at which point, big mistake, now the Iron Lady is upon you, don't cry to me Argentina, that was a nonsensical thing to do, and you were given ample time and jaw jaw to reconsider and withdrawal, didn't take the chance, ergo, Parachute Regiment, stand to, stand to.
As for Exocet? That's all part of the job, Royal Navy, when there is a stand to, there is going to be some fighting, and there is going to be some losses, and that's war in the end, and the Royal Navy took it all in stride, as they always do.

And unlike other South American nations with socialist experiments Chile has not experienced such disasters. For the continent they are down right stable. They backed the right horse and so did we.Smitty-48 wrote:The Cold War was a war, the Bolsheviks of Latin America were with the other side of the Iron Curtain, it wasn't a choice between Pinochet and Clement Attlee, it was a choice between Pinochet and Yuri Andropov, Yuri Andropov would have been better for Chile? But you see, Allende brought Pincohet down upon his own head, it was Allende who empowered Pinochet, Allende thought that Pinochet was going to be his man, that Pinochet was going to crack the whip for Allende, so it was Allende in the end, who backed that horse, and if the horse bucked the rider, so be it, Allende brought himself down in the end.

I don't know if he had much of a choice Pinochet was the next in line. Do you shake up the duty roster and hope it all goes your way or do you make the safe play and go with the next man up.Smitty-48 wrote:But you see, Allende brought Pincohet down upon his own head, it was Allende who empowered Pinochet, Allende thought that Pinochet was going to be his man, that Pinochet was going to crack the whip for Allende, so it was Allende in the end, who backed that horse, and if the horse bucked the rider, so be it, Allende brought himself down in the end.

Point being, there's no reason to shed any tears for the Allendeists, as they intended to sic Pinochet on their opponents, they were just as thuggish, they simply got beat at their own game.clubgop wrote:I don't know if he had much of a choice Pinochet was the next in line. It wasn't as if a communist backed take over of Chile by the trade unionists was universally supported, and while Allende may have been a fop, it wasn't as if the guys under him were not a goon squad, it's just a question of which goons are going to be running things, Yuri Andropov's goons, or NATO's goons.
Somebodies were going to get chucked out of the helicopters, it was either going to be their somebodies or our somebodies, the Cold War was a war after all, c'est le guerre. We're talking 1973-1989 here, it was the very brink of nuclear armageddon, all day everyday, fifteen minutes notice to launch, fuck Allende & Co, if they side with the Iron Curtain, of course the Iron Lady would stand against that.
If Nixon can go to Beijing, Maggie can go to Santiago, whatever, just win, baby.
