China is beefing up a campaign to root out services that circumvent the government's internet censorship with a 14-month-long "clean-up" of the internet industry.

The Ministry of Industry and Information Technology said in a directive that it forbids the operation of virtual private networks (VPNs) or leased lines that allow users and businesses to access blocked overseas websites without government permission.

Between now and March 2018, authorities will enforce the regulations with inspections of cloud-hosting and content-delivery services, an industry that has shown signs of "disorderly development," the ministry said Sunday.

The new enforcement measures are the latest steps in the Chinese government's efforts to cement its grip over the domestic internet and closely control what information may be accessed by the country's 731 million internet users.

A broken lawyer and a hawkish judge cast deep pall over China’s legal system
BEIJING — For 500 days, Li Chunfu, once a lively and tough human rights lawyer, was kept in secret detention by China’s Communist Party. When he was finally released on Jan. 12, his wife was so shocked she could hardly believe her eyes.

Her 44-year-old husband was a thin, pale and sick man, Bi Liping said, a fearful and paranoid person who seemed to have been broken by the system.
...
Li was one of 300 lawyers and advocates who were rounded up in a crackdown in July 2015. Most were soon released, but two have been sentenced and four remain in detention.

In statements to the China Change website, relatives and fellow lawyers said Li had been severely tortured and drugged during detention.

...

In a remarkable speech two days after Li’s release, the chief justice of the country’s Supreme Court told provincial judges to resist “erroneous” Western ideals of judicial independence, constitutional democracy and the separation of powers.

“One needs to have a clear-cut stand and dare to show the sword against them, to struggle against any erroneous words and actions that deny the leadership of the Communist Party, or slander the rule of law and the judicial system of socialism with Chinese characteristics,” Zhou Qiang said.

While the idea that the Communist Party is in firm control of the legal system is hardly new, to see the idea of judicial independence so explicitly condemned by the country’s top judge, a man once seen as a reformer keen on limiting officials’ power over local courts, came as a shock to many people.

Let's watch which countries sidle up to China. That will be a clear indicator who's okay with Communism & Totalitarian rule.

Any predictions?

The EU trades with China. They're going to fall in line with Xi.

The EU is a bad U.S. partner. The people are MUCH more socialist-leaning than their policies appear to be, and most hate America with a passion. They used to excuse their hatred as, "we like the people, we just don't like their government," but my experice abroad is they don't like the people much either. It's a generational thing: Millennial Europeans hate America & Americans, and would choose China given the chance.

Seriously, Martin... your view of Europeans hating Americans, is some sort of paranoid fantasy. You're considered weird, sure... but hatred? Nope. Which European countries have you visited, and which specific events there have made you conclude that all of Europe "hate" you?

And the US is still the largest trading partner of the European Union. Also, the political group that currently has parliamentary supremacy in the EMP are the Conservatives, not the Socialists. EU is more of a neo-liberal dream come true than a Socialist dream come true. May not be a classical liberal dream come true, I'd grant you that, though...

And do you know who the US' second largest trading partner is? Yup, it's China. So apparantly, according to your own bizarre logic, Americans hate America and are Communist. :|

No. Ideology is being used as one of the tools to create, and maintain, control.

It is all about power. Who has it, and who does not. Control the law, control information, and you will probably control the government, which will enable you to control everything. To have power over everything.

I'm using "hate" in the same way as it is used colloquially in America: "hate" crimes, "hate" women, "hate" speech.

p.s. The success of The Right politically in America & the EU is a reaction to the commie-ism of the Millennials.
