In point of fact, it was NOT overbooked. It was booked full, and United wanted to boot paying customers to make way for their employees.

That's overbooked. A pilot who is going to fly another plane of passengers needs the seat more, if he gives up his seat to man baby then an entire flight gets cancelled. It's not playing semantics. Overbooked means more paying passengers showed up than seats were available. That did not happen. There is a legal distinction here, and what United did was patently illegal. What the cops did was illegal as well.
