Re: THE ERA OF TRUMP
In fairness to JFK, back then, it was the press who were beating the war drums, there was a lot of chirruping about "soft on Communism!" and "appeasement at Munich!" and JFK was the one trying to tone things down. The crisis arose when he felt like Khrushchev had taken advantage and stabbed him in the back.

Didn't JFK bang the drum pretty hard with that Missile Gap talk though?Smitty-48 wrote:In fairness to JFK, back then, it was the press who were beating the war drums, there was a lot of chirruping about "soft on Communism!" and "appeasement at Munich!" and JFK was the one trying to tone things down. That's what Khrushchev would have said, what JFK said and what he did was two different things, but from JFK's point of view, he was open to dialogue and trying to calm things down, and then Khrushchev went and did an end run around behind the back.heydaralon wrote:Didn't JFK bang the drum pretty hard with that Missile Gap talk though?Smitty-48 wrote:In fairness to JFK, back then, it was the press who were beating the war drums, there was a lot of chirruping about "soft on Communism!" and "appeasement at Munich!" and JFK was the one trying to tone things down. Re: THE ERA OF TRUMP
Kennedy had adopted the peace through superior firepower doctrine, but within the context of that he was preaching an early version of detente, so when Khrushchev put the missiles in, JFK reacted like "I offered the open palm and this is what you do? You know I got people pushing me here, but then you go and do this? Now I have to take a hard stand, you've left me no other option, I can't back down if that's how you're going to play it..."
It was in the end a massive strategic blunder by the Soviets, they completely misjudged the situation.

Everyone using the phrase “white supremacy” in any context should be beaten with a bamboo pole. This policy should extend throughout 2018, with the goal of having more productive and rational conversations in 2019.

I'd say Nixon, Tricky Dick was on the sauce most of the time. On the Nixon tapes he's three sheets to the wind. I would actually submit, most of Nixon's blunders were related to him just being sauced up and then flying off the handle. The Conservative wrote:He was also on so many drugs and painkillers for his back it was ridiculous... he would have been known as the Highest president in US history if it was known at the time.DBTrek wrote:But he was a respectable president, not some crass, womanizing, philanderer with shady business ties.C-Mag wrote:JFK was praised for his nuclear brinksmanship.
