You know you're partly correct that there is a link with John McCain and Oleg Deripaska... through Paul Manafort, who has worked long for Oleg. (And some would argue for Putin through Oleg)
Of course, if you come down from the Trumpist La-la-land, the whole McCain-Deripaska link only shows how long Paul Manafort has worked for the Russians. In 2008, Manafort’s partner Rick Gates organized a meeting for the Russian billionaire with presidential candidate John McCain, and in 2016 Manafort offered him consultations on presidential campaign in the United States.
During his work with Deripaska, the structures of Manafort received from him $ 60 million in loans. Now Deripaska is suing a political technologist in the Cayman Islands: a Russian billionaire allegedly handed Manafort $ 19 million for investments in the interests of Deripaska, and he appropriated them.
See Here's the Russia influence controversy that John McCain doesn’t want you to know aboutIn fact, McCain’s drama involved the same foreign lobbyist Paul Manafort; one of the same Russian oligarchs, Oleg Deripaska; the same Russian diplomat, Sergey Kislyak, and the same wily Russian leader, Vladimir Putin, that now dominate the current Trump controversy.
* * *
The McCain story also is a poignant reminder the Putin’s allies have long sought U.S political influence, and that U.S. counterintelligence often focuses on keeping Americans from becoming compromised by foreigners.
“Before there was Trump, there were concerns about some of the same people being around McCain about 10 years ago, and we alerted his team to those concerns and they appeared to take some defensive action,” according to a U.S. official
But Nuland and McCain pals of Oleg? Lol. More like arch-enemies of Russian interests after 2014, but before of course it was a totally different game. But good example that Russians have been trying to influence Republican candidates for a long time.

DOJ Official Bruce Ohr Caught Hiding Wife’s Payments From Fusion GPS
Bruce Ohr, the Department of Justice official who brought opposition research on President Donald Trump to the FBI, did not disclose that Fusion GPS, which performed that research at the Democratic National Committee’s behest, was paying his wife, and did not obtain a conflict of interest waiver from his superiors at the Justice Department, documents obtained by The Daily Caller News Foundation show.

Shortly after noon on Friday, U.S. Special Counsel Robert Mueller announced an indictment of 13 Russian nationals and three Russian entities, accusing them of interfering in the 2016 presidential election and operating fake social media accounts.
The indictment announced on Friday was the first criminal case to accuse Russians of seeking to influence the outcome of the U.S. election and support Donald Trump.
Mueller charges "defendants knowingly and intentionally conspired with each other (and with persons known and unknown to the Grand Jury) to defraud the United States by impairing, obstructing, and defeating the lawful functions of the government through fraud and deceit for the purpose of interfering with the U.S. political and electoral processes, including the presidential election of 2016."
The indictment adds that "specialists were instructed to post content that focused on 'politics in the USA' and to 'use any opportunity to criticize Hillary and the rest (except Sanders and Trump—we support them)'."
Ultimately, and this is the punchline, the goal was to disparage Hillary Clinton and to assist the election of Donald Trump.

Can we expect the US to stop trying to influence foreign elections from now on?

Re: Russia! Russia!! Russia!!!
I see mention of fraud and deceit, operating fake social media accounts aren't identity theft or bank fraud though, and I don't see that mentioned anywhere as additional charges. Sounds like Mueller and company are charging them for shit that isn't even illegal.Hastur wrote:The charges are bank fraud and identity theft but the media is all CHARGED WITH MEDDLING IN THE ELECTION.

Honestly, this is my biggest bother with the whole Russia narrative.Hastur wrote:Can we expect the US to stop trying to influence foreign elections from now on?
And arrest Soros for meddling in Brexit.
1. The hypocrisy of the US IC criticizing any foreign nation for meddling in another's affair.
2. The media created narrative that what Russia is doing is unprecedented.
3. The purposeful exclusion of context in the reporting done by the media.
Those 3 things say to me the whole story is pretty much bullshit because there'd be no need to behave in such a dishonest manner if the truth was on your side.
