That seems like the NK's style, as fusion is clean and fission is dirty, so fission-fusion-fission three stage is the doomsday bomb, maximum radioactive fallout. Not to mention they probably have more weaponized uranium on hand than they do lithium-deuteride. The three stage for them, could actually be the cheaper and easier way to squeeze the megatons out of it, and miniaturize, while achieving maximum lethality for their buck.
Obviously they want a big bomb, because they don't have accuracy, but they also might only get a handful of bombs through the American defenses, might only be one that gets through in the end, so they want the dirtiest deadliest bomb of them all, to devastate the CONUS writ large with a radioactive shroud.
Getting back to the neutron bomb, that uranium tamper is what you remove to make it an N-bomb, because you don't need much plutonium to initiate fusion, the H-bomb burns the hydrogen in the isotopes to get its power, but fusion doesn't produce fallout, x-rays, gamma rays, neutrons, but no lingering fallout.
Almost all your fallout come from burning the uranium tamper.
So, the neutron bomb is the "clean" hydrogen bomb, but, there is the option to go the other way, and that's to use a bigger uranium tamper as a third stage booster, and then that's the "dirty" hydrogen bomb.
Most people would say "cobalt thorium g", from the movie, but I call it Redwing Tewa, which was the real deal, American version of, 5 megaton monster bomb, 87% fission, three stage dirty, plutonium-deuterium-uranium.
Look again, because if you're going to Cormac McCarthy's The Road, this is the bomb that's gonna take you there, Redwing Tewa, stare into the abyss....

Side note: Do you think my fellow Tennessean Cormac had nuclear winter in mind regarding The Road? That's been worrying me for years.

It's not so much that your intelligence is weak, it's just that the Juche Doomsday Cult is the Ultimate Totalitarian Regime, that's what I'm trying to tell ya'll, this ain't the Soviets, you had the Soviets penetrated eight ways from Sunday, the fact that the NK's are so opaque, just tells you how good they are at what they do, and how this abomination as it has become, is like no animal you've ever faced before, certainly in the nuclear paradigm.Fife wrote:Honest question, Smits: Is our intelligence really this weak?

Are they more rational than ISIS? Depends how you look at it, because Juche's definition of rational is the rationallity of the Doomsday Cult Ultimate Totalitarian Regime, they make George Orwell's 1984, look like a libertarian's paradise, they make Josef Stalin, look like a humanitarian, and they make the East German Stasi, look like a buncha slackers.
As to Nuclear Winter, it's all relative, there's Nuclear Winter and then there's nuclear winter, but if Redwing Tewa ever pops off on Los Angeles County, it's gonna get pretty damn nuclear wintery enough downwind from that, even in Tennesee.

See, the thing is, even in a two stage device, that uranium casing is enough to generate a massive amount of fallout, but if you go Redwing Tewa dirty, 87% fission, you make that casing thicker, into a third stage boosting charge, makes the blast bigger using less clean burning deuterium, but in doing so, it takes the radioactive fallout to whole nother level, 'specially if you're lacing that into the total vaporized material of a downtown Los Angeles and then putting it up in the slip stream.
Redwing Tewa is the dirtiest bomb ever detonated, at 5 megatons yield, it generated far more fallout than the Tsar Bomb did, at 57 megatons.

Re: North Korea News
It seems inevitable at this point because so many Americans don't want to believe the North Koreans are this crazy.
The weird thing is, though, that I am not sure Kim Jong-Un is that crazy, but the regime he runs really is. They are so insular and inward-looking, it's like an infinite feedback loop that drives them to madness. Their mental screens have been printing "hello world" over and over again for about sixty years and they pretty much lost grip of sanity. They are basically trapped in an infinite loop and most Americans operate as if they are working programs.

Shit. My old man was stationed in Seoul for a while back in the day. I remember him telling me that the fucking Koreans were crazy bastards, and to watch out for them. As far as I know, he never met a North Korean, ever.Smitty-48 wrote:Are they more rational than ISIS? Part of me thinks Seoul deserves to get annihilated as retribution for the Bixby button.

If they are third stage boosting, which I suspect they are, because for them, uranium-235 is cheaper and easier than lithium-deuteride, they have a lot of uranium-235 on hand, but lithium-deuteride for them is probably at a premium, then even for Smitty Lemay, that's some spooky shit right there right thur.
That's fuckin cray-cray by default, even at the height of the early Cold War Big Bomb Calvacade, the Americans and even the Soviets said; yeah, ah, no, that's too cray-cray for us, we gotta walk this shit back.

It's bizarre how little people seem to give a shit that these crazy fucks just detonated a huge fusion bomb and might soon be able to deliver it to the west coast of the United States.
