There is no blind faith. Getting the media to focus on a joke he made and pretend that that is more important than what he did before and after the joke, that plays to Trump's advantage. How is it idiotic for Trump to pursue his own political self interest at the media's expense? It's not.
The veterans were sufficiently honored, the joke that plays to the base didn't ruin everything, that's just media spin. It was a throw away remark and yet Trump has people devoting attention to discussing it because the media can't help but turn it into a big story because they are that easily triggered by Trump jokes, especially when a Democrat is the target. Obvious bait is obvious, Trump gave the media the rope so they can hang themselves. If you don't want to see that because you just want to assume Trump is an idiot no matter what he does, well that's on you.
When Trump tricks the media into falling over themselves to undermine their own credibility, it's usually not an accident, he's been doing that for decades, very successfully I might add. He's trolling the media again, come on now, he knows that Pocahontas joke triggers them, and he knows his base eats up, it's good politics. Even if you personally don't like the joke, or think some Native Americans might take offense, it doesn't hurt him more than the media coverage of it hurts the media, and hurts Elizabeth Warren.
