We tried but people called us pirates.
Maybe funding terrorists and supporting despotic regimes is your thing.
For legal reasons, we are not threatening to destroy U.S. government property with our glorious medieval siege engine. But if we wanted to, we could. But we won’t. But we could.

It was an attempt to enforce EU sanctions against Syria.

Oh.. my bad.. You declared it "legal" so that it became privateering.

Privateering would have involved selling the bounty and splitting the proceeds between the Crown and the crew.
It was sanction enforcement and it was released only when assurances were made by Iran that the oil would not be sold to Syria.
Meanwhile, the British registered tanker seized by Iran has not been released although some of its crew have.

Piracy would involve splitting the bounty amongst the marines who seized the boat.
The appearance of the tanker just two nautical miles away from a Syrian port confirms that the ship was legally seized in order to stop it breaking EU sanctions.
Its release had more to do with bargaining for the release of the Stena Impero and attempting to keep the Iran nuclear treaty on course. I don't think anyone believed Iran when it promised not to take the oil to Syria.

It's actually a Swedish owned tanker with an Indian, Russian, Latvian and Filipino crew sailing under a British flag.

LONDON - 10 September 2019: Britain summoned the Iranian ambassador on Tuesday to condemn what it said was a clear breach of the assurances it was given over the oil cargo of the tanker Adrian Darya 1, which had previously been detained for breaching EU sanctions.

"Iran has shown complete disregard for its own assurances over Adrian Darya 1," foreign minister Dominic Raab said in a statement, accusing Iran of reneging on a promise not to transfer oil from the tanker to Syria.

"This sale of oil to (Syrian President Bashar al-Assad's) brutal regime is part of a pattern of behaviour by the Government of Iran designed to disrupt regional security."

Britain said it would raise the issue at the United Nations later this month.

I'm sure a stern telling off will ensure this doesn't happen again.
