And the real tragedy for them was that the US did have a solution, the army & marine corps selected some previous insurgents to become the The Sons of Iraq, and along with the surge they smashed the Sunni insurgency. You had peace in the Sunni triangle. Who knows if the US wouldn't have chosen an asshole like Maliki in the first Place.

Just like Putin smashed the Chechen insurgency by giving power to one powerful former Chechen insurgent (and his son). You don't put down an insurgency by relying on foreigners who say they are going away at some point. You put down an insurgency by getting former insurgents to be your policemen, be your rulers and that wellcome you permanently.

This is the way you defeat a nasty enemy quickly, actually. Generals Botha and Smuts in British uniform to give a perfect example.

And the guys earlier...fighting the British (if somebody wouldn't know history of the Boer war).

Yep, the British know to handle these things... and likely the US military would too, if it would be in charge. But it isn't.

The British were prepared to garrison the British Empire indefinitely, the Americans are not, that's the difference, the American people are not prepared to garrison their Empire of Liberty with a constant supply of troops as the British were, the Americans run out of volunteers for any prolonged operation, and garrisoning an empire is a very prolonged operation indeed, a permanent one in fact.

The Americans wanted to go home, five minutes after they got to Iraq, so the enterprize was doomed from the get go, an Iraqi protectorate would require permanent occupation, Americans were not prepared to do it, so the Surge was a pointless exercise, there is no Surging to an empire, you have to go to stay, the British could not have ruled India, from London, the British ruled India, by moving to India and living there, in order to sustain that, they occupied Egypt as a protectorate; permanently. They didn't go to Egypt to "stabilize it" and then go home, they went to Egypt with an iron fist, and they never left.

In order to protect their position in Egypt which was protecting their position in the Far East, they took all of Arabia from the Turks, but they didn't really do that to hand it back to the Arabs, they always planned to garisson it; permanently.

In Iraq, America was fighting for the British Empire, but if America is to be the British Empire, it will have to go all the way, not to come and go, but to go and then stay.

The Dick Cheney Doctrine was for America to retake the British Empire, from the Suez Canal to the Khyber Pass; cannot be done by Empire of Liberty; would require several hundred thousand troops in permanent occupation.

Still, the real way is to do what the British did, make the people in the colonies truly part of your empire.

And for that, you yourself, Smitty-48, are the best example. Now with a more lousy power than the UK, there likely would have been war of independence and you might feel like the yanks here about the UK, or like the Irish feel about the British. Some Spain really didn't do well in the end with it's empire.

Although it sounds like a cliche, it's about hearts and minds. You can mold how people percieve themselves and how they think about certain foreigners.

Actually, the British Crown never had our hearts and minds, we were with the Americans, we were just about to overthrow the British Crown and join them, because the British Crown hadn't allowed representative government in the Canada's, then for some bizarre reason, the Americans attacked us out of the blue, so that is what drove us towards the British Crown, the British Crown didn't have our hearts and minds, until the Americans made themselves into a menace.

That lasted right up until the Somme, at which point, the British made themselves into the greater menace, and so we turned away from them again, back towards the Americans; Flight to Quality.

Canada is kind of like the Siberia of North America in that it's where we banish the old loyalists.

Istanbul attack: ISIS claims nightclub shooting; killer still at large

ISIS claimed responsibility for the New Year's attack at Istanbul's Reina nightclub that left 39 people dead, but authorities are still scrambling to find the killer.

ISIS' claim, made in a statement posted to Twitter, cannot be independently verified by CNN. But it boasted about the first major terrorist attack of 2017.

It's almost like firing or jailing huge numbers of judges, prosecutors and law enforcement officers in a purge makes a country less able to respond to terrorist threats.

Eh, attacks happen where they have plenty of cops, too. I'd say the strength of the security forces are pretty low on the list of things to blame here. It's clearly a coordinated attack from the US/ISIS axis to punish Turkey for exposing our alliance.
