I don't really get how anybody could consider terrorism more of an existential threat than 1200 nukes aimed at you....

Those nukes were aimed in my direction before I was born; the Twin Towers were built later.

A nuke destroys twin towers even more thoroughly than jet collisions, and would have a much higher death toll as well. Which is the existential threat?

An asteroid destroying the world is far more of an existential threat to the USA than a dude being shot and killed down by the train station. This is fairly obvious. Whether or not that fact is of consolation to those personally affected by the guy who got shot and killed down by the train station is not relevant to the issue at hand.
