The NCOIC was a badass in that situation no doubt.
You don't see leadership like that very often. It's not sexy to civilians, but I think any vet can appreciate that guy's cool under pressure.
He said it was total fuckin' chaos, they were trying to flag down a vehicle, no luck, they went to steal a vehicle, no gas, they couldn't get anybody on the radio, and then the Vietnamese started stampeding in a panic, and they grabbed a guy and said "what the fuck is going on?" and the Viet says "communists come now, they come now, down the road, right now" and he said "I hadn't really been worried up until that moment, but at that moment, yeah, that was worrying" lol.
It was a long time ago, I can't remember all the details, but at the end, the Viets had all took off, and it was all quiet, and they were looking down the road with binos, to see if they could see the NVA tanks coming, and then a horn honks at them from behind, and they all turn around, and there's the truck, somebody from the embassy sent it back to get them, and the driver is like "what are you guy's looking at?" lol.
