I thought monitoring phone calls from diplomats representing countries we have difficult relations with was standard.
And I think it has been quite public knowledge that the intelligence community was looking at the ties between some people and the Russians. So why now the outrage?
And once it came out that Flynn had been talking to the Russians, people here naturally assumed that Flynn knew that the phones of the Russian diplomats would be tapped (which I think is quite natural).
This has been a thing brewing for a long time. The first thing that caught my eye was a small article of foreign policy geeks being amazed about Trump's early foreign policy advisors have one Carter Page and his Pro-Russian remarks (and him being close to the Trump team). Page was quickly distanced from the Trump campaign (as now the accusation goes him being the middle man between Manafort and the Russians). The thing never did go away.
