Re: How's that Obamacare Repeal Working Out For You?
With respect to the socialized medicine issue, this video sort of addresses some of the problems.
It's much worse than he describes. But I'd also take issue with his conflation of socialized medicine (VA) with single-payer (Canada).
The more important point here is that, as bad as the VA system is (and it barely can even qualify as real health care), we can still sell our possessions and pay cash for real health care outside of the VA -- and about 75% of have to do that (including me). But if the entire nation went to socialized medicine, there would be NO ESCAPE.
For instance, when I tore several ligaments in my ankle a few years ago, I had to pay about $500 for a doctor to deal with it (plus the cost of x-rays). That was a discounted rate because of the fact that I was trapped in the VA. Lots of doctors work with veterans like this. Everybody knows that you'd be better off getting health care in Mexico than going to the VA in most cases. I tried to get it done through the VA. I waited over a week to see the general practitioner on an emergency visit. He created the appointment to see the orthopedist about a week after that. The orthopedist department canceled the appointment and refused to treat it. No appeals.
What the VA does to obfuscate this is showcase hospitals that are jointly run with universities. So you might have Loyola professors and their students treating people in a Chicago-area hospital. Which, for something like cancer might work out well, but for most things.. you still get the washed-up, failure doctors who work for the VA.

I've actually had good care at the VA . Though admittedly, it's been nothing serious.

Still a story on July 10:

On Friday, Great Ormond Street Hospital, where the child is being treated, said it had applied for a new court hearing "in light of claims of new evidence relating to potential treatment for his condition."
The case is due to be heard at the High Court in London later on Monday.

had a relative lose a child in central america last week that probably would have been fine if they'd been in the states. burns me up that these fuckers in the uk are telling these people they aren't allowed to take their child out of the country to get better healthcare.
but biorne tells me they're more free because they can get a license to watch t.v. and piss on the streets.

Re: How's that Obamacare Repeal Working Out For You?
Obamacare is failing.
What we were sold
1. President Barack Obama promised that his reform proposal would cut typical family costs by $2,500 annually. That, of course, never materialized. The typical family today pays about 35 percent of their income for health care.
2. Obama told America his proposal would increase competition in the health insurance markets but that hasn’t happened either.
The downward slide in competition means that in 2017, consumers in 70 percent of U.S. counties are left with just one or two insurer options on the exchanges. The 70 percent figure is way up from 36 percent in 2016.
3. Forget about keeping your plan.
Perhaps the most famous health care promise of all, Obama’s promise: “If you like your health care plan, you’ll be able to keep your health care plan.” In fact, there were 37 instances where Obama or a high-ranking administration official repeated that infamous promise to keep you plan and your doctor.
Rarely has there been such a disconnect between rhetoric and reality. In 2014, the first year that Obamacare was fully implemented, the Associated Press reported that there were at least 4.7 million canceled policies across 30 states.
4. No, you can’t necessarily keep your doctor.
Obama promised patients that they would be able to keep their doctors. For many patients, that also turned out to be untrue.
Obamacare’s rising costs, and its limited flexibility in federally fixed benefit designs, resulted in plans resorting to narrow provider networks. Narrow networks limit access to doctors and other medical professionals as a way to contain costs.

- The system is now so bad that it could spur us into single-payer or something like it
- millions more people now have coverage (even if it sucks)
- insurance company profits are through the roof.

How stupid do you have to be to not think that was the entire plan in the first place?GrumpyCatFace wrote:Agreed. But there are pros as well:C-Mag wrote:Obamacare is failing.
