Re: Why are you conservative, why are you liberal, why are you independent?
I don't know what the hell I have as a political ideology.
A bit social democrat. Quite nationalist, but not in a ethnocentric way. A bit classical liberal, primarily when it comes to personal liberty, not so much on economical liberty. A lot agrarian, a bit green, anti-centralization, both some national conservative values, and some progressive values. Pro-military, but anti intervention. Pro open market, but anti free market. Pro gun rights as a classical liberal principle, but not as a means to an end. Anti animal rights, but pro animal welfare. No stance on the abortion issue at all. Pro free speech.
My view on the state is they should only be empowered in the ways they can further empower all individuals in the society. So health care, education, welfare(within reason), and security, should be provided by the state, but not at the expense of the rights of the individual. The state exist for protecting the liberty and power of all individuals in the society.

Re: Why are you conservative, why are you liberal, why are you independent?
I am the way I am and believe what I believe because of life experiences and hearing/seeing others experiences. My parents and grandparents were not openly political, so I didn't get a lot from them in that regard other than core beliefs of doing the right thing, helping others, and getting ahead in life by working hard at whatever it was you were doing at the time.
I am not one label because there are issues considered more liberal that I agree with. I lean more conservative because I tend to agree with more of the things that are labeled as conservative.
As for what I want? Man, that could go on for a while. In terms of politics and related issues I want far-left liberals to leave me alone. The more you push things like soda taxes, mandatory solar panels, cultural appropriation, etc.. the more I will push against you.

“In order to prevent the Authoritarian nanny state, you must make me the authoritarian nanny”

Straw manning at it's finest right there. Poor spelling as well.

To reiterate and counter the lying morons..
I am not arguing that we should criminalize every immoral behavior.
I argue that we should not pretend as though immoral behavior doesn't affect other people.
I argue that doing so in effect means you claim that behavior is not immoral.
I argue that by pretending as though immoral behavior is not immoral, you necessitate social and legal sanctions/protections regarding it. These things lead to more authoritarianism like we saw with gay marriage.
I argue that by pretending as though the immoral behavior is not immoral, you also must ignore the actual social and individual costs of that behavior. You still have to pay those costs, and your cognitive dissonance about the costs isn't going to make them go away. You can say we should legalize heroin but if people are going to get addicted then let them die rather than fund all the drug rehabs and other support networks that will become necessary. But then you will have to pay for more police to clean up the crime you created. You will have to pay for people to manage the homelessness, used needle piles on the streets and playgrounds, violent crime (you could even pay with your life in that respect).
You will pay for the immoral behavior. That's why it is immoral. One way or another you have to pay.

I think what informed my views more than anything else was watching the divorce of business and ethics from the 70s into the 80s. I was much more libertarian before then.

Those decades where we departed from the halcyon times of mass spraying unsuspecting civilians with DDT and widely distributing Thalidomide over the counter. Yep.
Tragic when that marriage between business and ethics dissolved, and we were left with things like potato chip bags filled with 65% air.
Real turning point.

I feel ya.
It took me 2-3 years of looking around, listening to people studying ideologies to wind up saying Classic Liberalism best fits me. I'm still officially an independent, and I don't believe I will ever be a party member.
All parties, with too much power get corrupt, inflexible and lazy. They become the establishment. The GOP was a radical change party in 1855, but by 1930 they had become the establishment, owned by crony capitalists and incable of fixing things. The Dems are in the same situation right now.
