Jeremy Stephens in the second round is like Yoel Romero in the third, funny stuff. Wish he had waited just a little longer, before he dropped Emmett, and I would have gotten a bet in on him, but alas he did Jeremy Stephens like things right before I could.

Jaromir Jagr, bloody uncivilized to not know that, typical Yankee.
Good hockey player but damn those early 1990s hair dos.

That rule is stupid anyway, he's a dummy for nearly getting DQ'd when he was going to win regardless, so never should have thrown the knee, but otherwise I have no issue with it.

No knees to head of a grounded opponent, one of the stupidest rules of the unified rules, right up there with no 12-6 elbows. Fuck both of those rules and horses they rode in on.

I personally like the rule because it encourages grappling and watching an already grounded opponent just get kicked unconscious is kind of grim, but, yeah, it is pretty stupid in the context of MMA.

Yeah but it encourages stupid grappling, wrestlers shouldn't be given a leg up because some asshole regulators overreacted to Gan McGee busting a dude up with knees to the head on the ground when hes 6' 7" and "our feelz says that's too far, we might get banned if the John McCain's of the world see too much of this, change the rule paranoia". Such bullshit, it's the zombie legacy from when the legality of MMA was under threat by state laws, and we're still stuck with it almost two decades later.

Grappling is always going to be a little favored in a sport context since you can stay competitive for a longer career, and there is something that just isn't gratifying about watching someone getting kicked when they are down, or winning purely on a puncher's chance.

I think it comes down to if you think the goal of MMA is to be as close to a street fight as possible, or as sporting as possible. Both positions have some merit.

It's not more sporting to let wrestlers keep their heads in a position to be kneed without having to pay for it or even be concerned that they are putting themselves in that kind of vulnerable spot, and all because of a stupid rule.
/shrugs

It's significantly less sporting to have that rule exist, in fact, and it makes it less like a real fight, a double whammy of terrible, like I said, one of the worst rules in the entire sport. If you go and watch some PRIDE fights, you should warm up to knees to the head of a grounded opponent when you see how it could actually function in an MMA context.

Also quicker knockouts and less volume of strikes absorbed, that actually leads to longer careers as well, it's the fighters who are too tough for their own good and take a shit ton of punishment because they can take without getting KO'd, they are the one's who end up getting their careers shortened. There really is no good argument in favor of the rule, I've heard them all.

I can't think if any position from the ground that is any way advantageous that is vulnerable exclusively to knees. Don't need knees for a good ol fashion ground and pound.

Sprawl and Front headlock, hell it could even benefit wrestlers, just not lazy ones who like to take forever try to finish single and double legs real lazy like, but wrestlers they are great from both of those positions. You could land punches or elbows from there too, but they won't be anywhere near as effective as knees. Well sometimes elbows are pretty good, but knees are even better.

Also, side control, north-south, back-side, hell there are lots of spots where knees to the head of a grounded opponent could come in handy, especially from top position, where wrestlers are at their best.
