When it comes to man against nature, mother nature will eventually win... She's slow and conniving using mold/rot/decay, freezing water or torrential rain, fire, disease, and all kinds of tricks.

There are millions of vacant homes... it would be cheaper to give these people a home and help them get off the streets than allow this crap to continue.

And have them suck from the teat of the State.
That's not a very Conservative idea....

Oh no? Actually it’s very Conservative.

Allowing people to live in vacant houses, allowing them to live off the streets, allowing them to upkeep property, as well as stay healthier for longer?

All things would be cheaper than allowing them to stay homeless.

Live in vacant houses...
You mean squat.
Never seen this pitched as a conservative idea.
But hey... you can pitch ideas in any moral code.
As long as you are appealing to the values of your audience.

I live in a state where I see homeless all over the place, where the state and towns try to sweep the problems away and demand more money while doing so because they don't have enough to cover the costs of what they do... which in most cases goes to administration.

If we can build half-way houses to druggies and others to get them back on their feet, then we can give homeless military vets and those who have been put into a situation beyond their control in many cases a place to live. We have in Mass, acres of military housing that has been empty for well over 20 years, we have houses that need a little rehabilitation to make livable again... not grand expensive houses, but in many cases starter houses, or houses that could support a family...

Instead of having the town or state tare them down and rebuild over them with these McMansions, how about we take care of two birds with one stone? We could have these people in houses, with heat, hot water, and a place to sleep, a residence to call their own, and while doing so, giving them the support required to get back on their feet.

Once they do, they can have the option to rent to own the house by giving at most 25% of their paycheck to "rent"... for the initial cost of the house before repairs.

You will allow the housing market to strengthen, and you'll also give homeless people the ability to feel like part of the community and civilization again instead of being looked down upon as people walk by them each day begging for money.

It would be cheaper to help them this way than it would find them on the street ODing or with some other illness where an emergency room is their only life support.
