NFL will not be coming out as winners from this. Their ratings have been tanking for a while, and this is only going to accelerate it.

My understanding is that it needs to be false, and defaming with malicious intent.Speaker to Animals wrote:Nukedog wrote:In court where Jesse sued the deceased family for 1.8 million. Funny how having the right greasy lawyer can sometimes "prove" things.Viktorthepirate wrote:

They didn't prove it was a lie, though. All he had to do was prove that Kyle publishing the information "defamed" him. The jury was instructed to not determine if it was a lie at all. Further, several different people saw it happen. Ventura certainly wants people to believe it was a lie. That's for damned sure.
I mean if I say some racist shit, and you write about it in a book. I can't sue you because it looks bad for me.
Kyle lied about a whole bunch of things. So I'm inclined to believe it was a bullshit story especially if a jury agreed as well. Jurors are emotional creatures, I doubt they would have found against the Kyle estate without good reason. Watch any interview with jurors, they still say stupid shit like "if he was innocent why didn't he testify?"
Case was thrown out later however.

It's something that's not even hard to believe considering his Fonda like, somewhat unstable state of mind.Speaker to Animals wrote:Nukedog wrote:In court where Jesse sued the deceased family for 1.8 million. I don't think so but I am not a lawyer. You can get away with a lot of bullshit in civil courts too.

Me neither. I know crim law pretty well but tort is way out of my knowledge.Speaker to Animals wrote:Viktorthepirate wrote:My understanding is that it needs to be false, and defaming with malicious intent.Speaker to Animals wrote:

I read that same article. But then I read another saying the Kyle estate only had one witness. Frankly I don't know what is the situation without spending all afternoon looking into it. So I'm just defaulting to the jury decision.
I don't think a jury of people would find against a widow without good reason. I could be wrong, but I think it's logical.

The jury didn't find that he lied, though. They only found that he defamed Ventura by publishing it.
Have you ever been to family court? I take exactly ZERO stock in anything a civil court finds, personally. I have seen what happens there, and it's just a farce, really.

IMO, in the past, whenever athletes start to put themselves ahead of the game the entire league suffers. Every time there is a strike a lot of the public just says fuck it. It does tend to bounce back later, but there will be a huge financial cost to the NFL for being scared cucks and bowing to a bunch of privileged kids who have been treated like gods for 10-20 years because they can run fast and jump high.

An article I read said it had to be proven false and defaming. People were saying in the beginning Ventura had very little chance of winning.Speaker to Animals wrote:The jury didn't find that he lied, though. They only found that he defamed Ventura by publishing it.

But it was a journalist, not a lawyer telling me this. However false and defaming is logical. Otherwise you could sue anyone who says things that make you look bad even if they are true. Which is clearly not happening.

dollar amounts to hours of work using U.S. Census Bureau data on median household income for the county in which each city is located, while controlling for the number of earners per household with data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Here are the results for all 32 teams:
The numbers above indicate that in many cities, attending a pro football game is out of the question for households at or below the median income. We found that, on average, the NFL game day experience costs the equivalent of 26.6 hours of work in NFL cities—over half a work week.
