Proper Procedure for Fighting?

This is really getting tangential, I know. How many Canadians realize how different we Americans are from each other? .

Hard for me to say, because I'm a student of American history, I have American roots, my father was raised in America, his parents became Americans long before I was born, I was steeped in America from a very young age, so it's hard for me to judge how other Canadians view the subtleties of America, sometimes I assume that they get it, but then realize that they don't, my wife for instance, she thinks you're all cray-cray, she doesn't get you, and if I try to argue your case, she just covers her ears "wah-wah-wah, I can't hear you!" and then runs away.

Fighting completely sucks, but sometimes you gotta do it.

I can clearly remember 6 fights in my life, I didn't start a single one, the ones I remember best are the two fights where I got obliterated.

Specifically among high school age kids. A lot of American schools today have such an expansive no tolerance policy that a guy who gets punched- and doesn't hit back- at home can be suspended for fighting. This level seems absolutely ludicrous to me, but I can at least understand the motivations for it.

What should be proper procedure for fighting, in and/or out of school?

There is no such thing as a fair fight. You want to fight, fight as if your life depended on it, fight to the mats, and fight to win. If you don't want to fight dirty, don't get into a situation in where a fight is required. Never assume you have the upper hand, and if you get into a fight, make sure you never throw the first punch, but always make sure you throw the last.

You can smash a dude on the ground, as bad or worse than you can on the feet if you know what you're doing.

Yes you can, but again, no such thing as a "fair fight" the MMA is as close to dirty fighting as you can get without it being that exactly.
