These veteran courts sound like a criminal justice system that is focused on rehabilitation.
Which sounds like a great idea, period. I wouldn't limit it to only veterans though.

They are giving veterans a get out of jail free card, dude. What do you really think the rest of us think about that?
If you just came to us veterans and asked what to do about veterans who commit various felonies, you'd get the opposite idea.

We all went through the process. We all understand discipline.
A lot of minor crimes I think are bullshit, but those courts are for felonies. If there is one thing all of us understand it is the rehabilitative potential of literally cleaning shit with a toothbrush for the next six months.
The shit I would rather do is stop jailing fathers for being unable to pay child support. Stop jailing people for drug addictions. Stop treating the jails as a revenue collection scheme.
But people who commit actual felonies that ought to remain felonies?? No.
This is your third DUI? I don't give a fuck who you are or what you did. Go to jail.

Equal justice under the law.
Three DUI's is three DUI's - don't care if you're a Starbucks barista or 3-Star General.

Like most folks I believe we can probably ease up on some of the misdemeanor prosecutions and sentences. Maybe we can even ease up on some of the non-violent felony sentencing. But what we shouldn't do is have separate justice for vets and civilians.

Isn't the idea to be lenient on veterans who might be suffering PTSD and divert them to treatment? Grand idea, as long as you do it for all mental illness and not use the penal system as a substitute mental health system. Tremendous numbers of the incarcerated are simply nuts, and get caught up when trying to procure either the money or drugs to self medicate. The truly violent are a different story.
We are only accustomed to dealing with like twenty online personas at a time so when we only have about ten people some people have to be strawmanned in order to advance our same relative go nowhere nonsense positions. -TheReal_ND

The question is why we would do this for former government employees, but not civilians.brewster wrote: ↑Fri Feb 08, 2019 5:27 pmIsn't the idea to be lenient on veterans who might be suffering PTSD and divert them to treatment? Take that into account at sentencing.brewster wrote: ↑Fri Feb 08, 2019 5:27 pmIsn't the idea to be lenient on veterans who might be suffering PTSD and divert them to treatment?
