Fun fact; the Boer National Party did not enact the Apartheid policy (modeled on the American Jim Crow laws) with the purpose of oppressing the blacks in South Africa, the real purpose was to take control of the political and economic situation, in order to dominate the British South Africans, in the wake of the Second Boer War, there had been a power sharing agreement, Apartheid was a planned method of asserting Boer control, free of British influence, the repression of the blacks was merely a byproduct.

Apartheid was the mechanism by which the Boer finally achieved their republic free of the British Empire, and this was the plan all along. Apartheid was meant to unify the Boer, give them something to rally around, and by doing so, ensconce them in the center of power while driving the British to the margins, and it worked. The blacks weren't really central to the plan, segregation was simply the rubric the Boer used to take political control of the entire country.

The problems for the National Party arose, not because the blacks were insurging against them, nor was it external pressure, the problem was, as the Boer became the center of power, more and more Boer moved from the farms and rural areas, into the political and financial capitals of the cities, and as they did, they became ever more cosmopolitan and liberalized, until it was the urbanized Boer themselves, who came to oppose Apartheid.
