Re: Economics: Minimum Wage, Who Gets Hurt?
Just to put this upfront, DB in all of these threads I'm not trying to argue in bad faith at all. I'm trying to pull on the strings of your arguments and see where they lead, I'm seeking logical ends or being reductive in order to see the foundations of these structures. I appreciate the fact that you yourself are participating in good faith, I think the forum is actually better for it, and it makes me excited to come here to debate and go and research. So thank you for these series of threads. They're good fun .

Most people do not even make so little as minimum wage. It is kind of a silly argument, actually.

Jedi, quit playing games and answer DB's question. Where would the businesses get the money to pay their employees that much?

I'm not playing games, the question is complicated. If you don't take a holistic view of the situation, then perhaps you miss the truth of the thing. He argues for businesses, I argue for labor.PartyOf5 wrote:Jedi, quit playing games and answer DB's question. Where would the businesses get the money to pay their employees that much?

I appreciate it. The threads serve a dual purpose. The first, to share my understanding of economics with others so they can know what I know and evaluate their beliefs accordingly. The second, to give everyone an opportunity to tell me I don't know shit, and to educate me with a better understanding of economics if I've got something wrong.

No, just working my way through Basic Economics by Thomas Sowell. I was raised by a California Democrat so my foundations in economic theory consisted of “Rich people and corporations are out to screw you and hoard all the wealth. Trust unions and government regulations to keep you safe”.
The book has offered a lot of insight into how economics actually works, divorced from political opinion. It’s written in layman’s terms and cites countless real world examples to demonstrate its points. I recommend it. It’s a great book for anyone wasn’t taught the basics of what an economy is, how it functions, and how popular methods of tinkering with it play out in the long term.
