I believe that most people view them in a less cynical way. I appreciate it for what it means to the athletes, despite the politics. Everywhere you turn there's corruption, but mostly life is people trying to get on with their business, including those who spend their entire childhood following a healthy passion.

Many of the athletes spend their whole lives training for events which will never make them rich. They do it for the love of the sport and the honour of competing for their country. I think that is something to be admired. If it's not capitalistic enough for you there are plenty of sports dripping with money and corruption and cheating because not winning can lose you millions of bucks. If money is the only thing you admire then don't watch the curling or the cross country skiing it has nothing for you. If you want to see skiers putting life and limb at risk to acheive the perfect downhill run and win Olympic glory then in my opinion you are a sportsfan and not a whiney bitch moaning because one sport is not run the way you want it to be.
