Balancing is fun, there aren't many things I haven't tried balancing on my chin. 21 foot civil war pike was heavy but an easy balance.
Having it on the top of your head where you can't see it is a different matter altogether. I bet they load the basket carefully.
I'm going to try walking with my firewood crate on my head next time I need some wood.

When I first learned how to spin a basketball, place it on a 6' bamboo pole and balance it on my chin I got hold of a 15' pole and tried to use that.
Problem was I had to climb a step ladder to get the ball on top and by the time I'd got back on the ground and got the pole to my chin the ball had almost stopped spinning.
I spent hours trying and manged it once or twice.

This took me about 50 hrs to learn over the course of a year

If I walked for miles like they do, fortunately I'm only 40 paces away from my woodstore. I guess they build some powerful neck muscles over a lifetime. A bit like the Nepalese porters carrying huge loads on their back with a head strap taking half the weight.

The method Nepalese porters use to carry nearly double their own weight — by strapping loads to their head, walking slowly for many hours and taking frequent rests — is most efficient in the world, say scientists. The porters can carry up to 20 per cent of their weight 'for free', using no more energy than if they were carrying nothing. The researchers, led by Norman Heglund of the Louvain Catholic University, Belgium, calculated the energy efficiency of eight Nepalese porters who regularly walk from the capital, Kathmandu, to a market town near Mount Everest. The new findings, published today in Science, show that the Nepalese porters carry loads that are, on average, one-third heavier than the heaviest loads that African women carry using the same amount of energy.
