Why do you think this is an EU matter? This is a matter for Spain and it's Constitution.C-Mag wrote:DBTrek wrote:Separatists in the USA should take note.Nukedog wrote:

That’s what Trump thinks of your vote for independence.
I would much rather have seen the US just say. That is a Spanish and EU matter.

For legal reasons, we are not threatening to destroy U.S. government property with our glorious medieval siege engine. But if we wanted to, we could. But we won’t. But we could.

The smartest thing the EU can do in this case, is nothing.

I was setting a precedence of concern
1. Spain & Catalonia
2. EU
3. Others
Like I said, I'd rather the US State Department jump in there and make statements throwing US influence around in other countries affairs. If I'm POTUS (and I'm not), I'm having a little sit down with Nikki Haley about jumping into other countries business.
I see the Spanish Government went all Franco on Catalonia and dissolved the local government.

Well, I'd have liked to have seen more condemnation for the police brutality during the attempt at a referendum but interfering in a country's constitutional affairs is not what they should do.Otern wrote:Yup.Montegriffo wrote: Why do you think this is an EU matter? I don't think they will TBH, after all they didn't interfere in Scotlands bid for independance.
I think both sides are going about this badly. The Catalonians should have started with a referendum on changing the Spanish constitution to allow an independance vote rather than going ahead with an illegal referendum and then declaring Independance without a proper mandate. The Spanish government behaved dreadfully by sending in their thuggish police and again by disolving the Catalan parliament and imprisoning Catalan politicians for sedition.
Both sides need to calm down and start looking for ways to end the escalation before this turns really violent.

I don't know much about specifics, but I'm interested to see how the espoused right to self-determination is treated as things move forward by the UN et al.

This should be obvious to anyone who knows that the Civil War happened in US.DBTrek wrote:Separatists in the USA should take note.Nukedog wrote:

We can bitch and moan about what the Constitution says, what the intent of the Founders were, etc all we want but the Civil War proved what happens when states try and secede from the Union

Well the federalists won. Only getting out from under them is to wait them out and hope you're still around to pick up the pieces.

Re: Catalan Independence
Any bets on whether or not Catalan Independence ends up in a shooting/bombing insurgency ?
